Hunting: A Guide to Equipment Safety

For many people the sport of hunting is a popular hobby; however, it's important to recognize that this widely enjoyed activity can also be extremely dangerous. If you enjoy hunting, or you are considering taking up the sport, then there are several safety tips should be aware of in order to stay safe and enjoy many more hunting seasons to come.

One of the first steps that you should take in order to make sure that you stay safe is to ensure that you have the proper safety equipment. One of the most important pieces of equipment you should always carry with you while hunting is a well stocked first aid equipment. Regardless of where you hunt or what type of hunting you prefer, this piece of equipment can be used in case of snake bites and other types of emergencies to control the situation until professional help can be obtained.

If at all possible, it's also important to always carry a cell phone with you when hunting. If you're concerned about the sound of a ringing cell phone scaring your prey away, use the vibrator option, but do make a point to take one with you. It will give you valuable, and potentially life saving assistance, in the event of an emergency. If you do not currently own a cell phone and feel the cost may be too prohibitive, consider a pre-paid cell phone. Along the same lines, make a point to tell someone when you're leaving, where you're going and how long you think you will be gone.

It's also important to use equipment that will protect both your ears and eyes when hunting. While it may not seem to present much danger at the time, long term exposure to the firing of guns can cause gradual loss of hearing and cause damage to your eyes from gases escaping from your ammunition. Play it safe and wear the appropriate safety equipment, including ear plugs and safety glasses.

If you are going to be hunting near or on the water, make a point to wear a life jacket. Even if you are a good swimmer and feel confident in your abilities, this is an important matter. Do not remove your life jacket until you are safely ashore.

When hunting from a tree stand, take the time to install and utilize a safety belt. This is especially important if you are hunting from a stand that is particularly high. The safety belt will prevent you from becoming injured in a fall.

Using the proper equipment while hunting also includes making sure that you are wearing appropriate weather for the weather that you will encounter during your hunt. Make sure that you wear solid footwear that will help you to securely navigate the woods. If the weather is damp or cool, it's also a good idea to bring along a hooded rain jacket. It is also extremely important that you wear orange above the waist to ensure that you do not accidentally become the target of another hunter. Ideally, wear an orange hat and vest.

Even if you do not think that you will be hunting after dark, go ahead and bring along a flashlight as well. In the even that you stay longer than you intended, have an accident or become lost, this may prevent a variety of problems. Taking a compass with you can also help you find your way out of the woods in the event that you should get turned around.

Finally, in the event that you decide to use an ATV while hunting, do so with caution. Do not take chances, observe the manufacturers guidelines and always secure your weapon in a rack or secured case before putting your ATV in motion.
