Hunting Safety Tips
|
One of the most important hunting safety tips you can follow is to insure that you know how to use your gun correctly before embarking on a safety trip. Make sure that your gun is well sighted and that you feel comfortable with aiming and firing. If you do not yet feel comfortable, spend some time at a firing range with an experienced guide before taking to the woods. When hunting, it's also extremely important to fully identify your target before pulling the trigger. Sadly, far too many lives have been lost due to a hunter failing to identify his target before firing. If there is any doubt whatsoever about whether the object you have sighted is animal or not, don't shoot. While you may miss the big game prize, you could also well be saving the life of an innocent person. Along the same lines, be sure you completely understand your surroundings to the best degree possible. If you're not sure what lies behind a target, it's best not to shoot. This includes hills, ridges, etc. At the same time, be fully aware of how far your particular ammunition will travel. If you should happen to miss your target, and the bullet travels far enough, you could accidentally cause an accident. If you feel you are too close to the edge of your safety zone, don't take the risk. While many people enjoy hunting at dusk, and even at night, be aware that this is extremely dangerous. It can be quite difficult to properly sight and identify your target when the natural light fades. You could very well make a mistake and shoot something other than your target. In addition, it becomes much easier to get turned around in the woods after the sun goes down and before you know it you could find yourself in a world of trouble. Save yourself, and others, trouble by heading home before the sun goes down. It's also a good idea to take the time to learn how to properly carry and point your gun. The manner in which you hold your gun may well depend on whether you are hunting alone or with a group. If you are hunting alone, the most important factor in safely carrying your gun is to ensure that it is pointed in a safe direction. That means away from yourself and away from any direction that could be potentially dangerous. When hunting with groups, ensure that the gun is never pointed in the direction of another person. If you're walking in single file, never carry the gun over your shoulder, as it could accidentally misfire and injure someone in your real. In this instance, it's best to cradle the gun or use the two-handed method to safely carry the gun. When walking side by side; however, just the opposite is true.
