Hypoglycemic Diet: Basic Rules And Tips

A hypoglygemic diet usually includes foods that can help you fight hypoglycemia, a condition that appears when the sugar in the blood drops under a normal level.

There are several types of hypoglycemia. For instance, some diseases that include tumors and liver conditions lead to the appearance of organic hypoglycemia, that can be treated through drugs or surgery. But the most widespread type is the hypoglycemia that appears when some foods are eaten.

When these foods are ingested and reach the human body, entering the blood stream, the reaction is a spike of glucose. In some people, the organism fails to adjust right away to this spike, and, therefore, the body will try to do it by an over-reaction that translates in a spike of adrenaline rush. Adrenaline is needed to get the glucose level in the blood higher. You can avoid experiencing this type of hypoglycemia that is called reactive hypoglycemia, by letting the glucose to be released in the blood little by little and not all of a sudden.

The best instant remedy for bouts of reactive hypoglycemia is to eat a snack or even a meal. Many people that feel the level of sugar in the blood dropping, think that reaching for a sweet candy or a fizzy drink is the right solution, but the truth is that something like that can cause the opposite, as they are made out only of sugar and they cause just another spike of glucose in the body.

Carbohydrates are the best foods to compensate for what is happening inside your body. Eating cereals, breads, bagels or crackers will remedy the problem and glucose will be released slowly into your bloodstream. If you know that your body has a tendency for hypoglycemia, it is best to enrich your diet with some foods like whole grain bread and cheese, as the substances in them, protein and fat will let the carbohydrate be digested easily, and the glucose in the body will reach the ideal level easier.

A hypoglycemic diet is meant to cause the body to digest food slowly, so the level of glucose does not reach high levels in a short time. Here are some clues on how a hypoglycemic diet should look like:

- carbohydrates need to be a part of any hypoglycemic diet; include vegetables, whole grain rice, whole grain breads and cereals in your daily meals, as these are complex carbohydrates that are processed slower by the body.

- on the other hand, forget about carbohydrates like sodas, cookies, honey, jam, sugar, as these are not good for you.

- other foods that are great to regulate the level of glucose in your body are the foods rich in fiber, like cereals, brown rice, broccoli, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and fruits such as apples, lemons, oranges, strawberries and legumes like beans and peas.

- stay away from canned juice; as much as you can, eat the whole fruit, or, if you want some juice, just use your juicemaker to make some fresh juice out of fresh fruits.

- more meals a day are more advisable than just two or three meals to cover all your necessities.

- beverages with a lot of caffeine have the same effect as the foods that cause hypoglycemia in your body.

- alcohol is another thing that you should stay away from, because it causes hypoglycemia, especially if ingested without eating anything.

- some healthy exercising every once in a while is indicated, as the excessive weight can be a reason why your body over-reacts.
