Hypothyroidism Diet What To Eat

Hypothyroidism is a condition that involves the dysfunction of the thyroid gland. It has a lot of symptoms, like tiredness, apathy, depression, constipation, hair loss and so on.

Serious cases of hypothyroidism include cretinism, that usually appears at birth and it is marked by retarded mental growth; Hashimotos thyroiditis is another condition, and the damage that can occur on radiation treatment of the said gland when the patient suffers of hyperthyroidism can also lead to hypothyroidism. Some people have goitre, an unusual enlargement of the gland, that occurs as a result of the lack of iodine in the water, or the excessive consumption of foods that can influence the development of the condition (such foods are cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli). The thyroid gland is in close connection with the pituitary gland, so if that suffers a dysfunction, so does the other.

There is medication that can be taken for this condition. The drugs used in the treatment are based on synthetic thyroid or desiccated thyroid hormone. This hormone practically needs to replace the one from the body to compensate for its dysfunctions.

There are certain solutions in terms of hypothyroidism diet that can be taken. For instance, the consumption of foods like cabbage, broccoli, sweet potatoes, soya, lima beans, or rapseed should be limited or taken out of the diet. Because these plants have goitrogens, the thyroid gland can become affected. Replace these foods with those rich in iodine, like bananas, beetroot, radish, parsley, potatoes, kelp. A patient with hypothyroidism needs to eat less red meat, eggs, fats, sugar and sodium chloride.

If iodine lacks from the body for a long time, the effects on the thyroid gland can become quite severe. But taking too much iodine can be harmful as well. Even this excess can lead to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Taking some iodine supplements that come with other minerals for the body is enough to make up for the lack of iodine.

A little dose of thyroxine helps the patient with hypothyroidism to deal easier with the condition. Many times, this amino acid helps with the depression experienced by patients, as they usually have a low level of thyrosine in their bodies.

Tyrosine also needs other elements to get processed by the body, like B vitamins and copper. A hypothyroidism diet should contain also vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, selenium and zinc.

Natural remedies are also to be included into a hypothyroidism diet. Bladderwarack, which is a seaweed rich in iodine can become part of such a diet. Supplements contain this seaweed and they are recommended for hypothyroidism patients. Chinese herbs also help these people.

Exposure to toxic elements does not help at all, so it should be limited by any means. If the patient has to go to a workplace where they work with polybrominated biphenyls, cardon disulfides, or heavy metals, they will experience a deterioration of their health.

Physical activity is on the bright side with hypothyroidism. An exercise routine will help the people with hypothyroidism overcome easier the symptoms of the condition. As these men and women need to have a high metabolism rate, that could be lowered by diets, exercise can make it go back to normal. Brisk walking, running, cycling or swimming are fit exercises for people with hypothyroidism.

A hypothyroidism diet should be scarce in goitrogens foods, that should not be eaten raw, by any means, but rich in iodine based foods. A good exercise routine every day helps a lot, and taking supplements is also recommended, along with vitamins and minerals.
