Implant Rehabilitation
|
Dental implants allow patients to have new teeth that look, feel and function just like their natural teeth. Implants are stronger and more durable than dentures or bridges. They act like your natural roots anchoring all restorative replacements - including crowns. The entire process, including rehabilitation, can take over six months to complete. Your dentist will advise you on the best course of action to take to speed up your recovery. Cause of Tooth Loss A dental patient chooses implants for a variety of reasons. The following are some of the more common causes of tooth loss: - Trauma caused by an accident or fight - Root canal failure - Periodontal disease (gum disease) - Excessive tooth decay - Extreme wear and tear Dental fitness is a big part of a person's overall health. If a patient suffers from tooth loss, the ramifications can be devastating to a person's self esteem and confidence. Here are some other reasons a patient should consider implant surgery: - One or more missing teeth - You are unable or unwilling to wear dentures - Your jawbone has reached full growth - Your oral tissues are healthy - You have adequate bones to secure the implants with no health challenges that will affect bone healing - You are able to commit several months for the complete process Procedure The entire dental implant procedure can take three to six months to complete depending on whether or not bone grafting is required. A skilled dentist bores a small diameter pilot hole into the jawbone. The pilot hole is widened to allow room for the implant, which is anchored by a titanium screw. The anchor is topped with a protective covering to speed-up the healing process. After a few months, the cover is replaced with a temporary crown until the permanent tooth is constructed. The new tooth is shipped to the dentist from the lab and custom fitted to the anchor in the dentist's office. The final fit may take several office visits and up to two months for the entire process to be completed. It's important to be carefully screened before choosing dental implants. Some medical circumstances lower the success rate of dental implants including diabetes and radiation therapy in the mouth area.
