Importance of SEO



Having a website is of no use until you have visitors to read about you and your business. It's like having a well designed, well written and well bound book safely tucked away in a drawer, hidden from others eyes.

According to statistics, 85% of the traffic on the internet visits websites through major search engines; Google, Yahoo and MSN, 75% of that comes from the top ten listings on their first page and the number of internet users in year 2008 has increased to a staggering 1,463 million people.

Search Engine Optimization plays the role of a link between you and your desired target market.

Search Engine Optimization is a process that is used to build or modify a website so it will be found and read by search engines. 1.    Body Copy

3.    Title, Header and ALT tags

Title Tag should be a short logical description of your web page. Search engines value the words in your title tag. Adding ALT tags to images helps the search engine see the image in words which in turn helps with the keyword density of the website.

4.    Keyword weight

Generally, the keyword weight must be 8% of the total website content. Although different search engines have different preferences on how many times the keyword must appear on the website, it is imperative to the websites success. You must make sure not to over-use the keywords or it would be considered keyword spamming and search engines with disregard their usage and omit your website from results.

5.    Inbound Links

Search engines give great value to the number and quality of the links pointing to your website. These are called inbound links. The page rank of websites linking to your website is also given importance. The authenticity of your website is sealed if the linking website is a high-ranking website.

6.    Anchor Text

Anchor text is the visible text of any hyperlink. It is advisable to choose words descriptive of the page content. E.g. avoid "Click here" as anchor text, instead aim for concise text such as, "Top ten Movies" for a page containing a list of top ten movies.

7.    URL Structure

Descriptive folder and file names help the search engines decide this is what they are looking for. There are ways to simplify the links for search engines even if you are running a Content Management System on your website.

While the above mentioned practices will help you win a good ranking on the search engines, there is no doubt that it is achieved over a period of time. However, to speed up the process you can use blogs and social media sites to talk about your business and projects.

Search Engine Optimization is still evolving and the best practices and methods of SEO keep changing from time to time. Google and other search engines keep changing their rules and regulations as they evolve. Your safest bet would be contacting an SEO company that has a track record of having websites indexed in the search engines and aiding them in receiving the ranking they deserve.
