Indoor Greenhouse: A Great Add On For Your Apartment
|
First, make sure that you have all that you need at your disposal. Purchase, if you do not already have, some plastic shelves, some lights, some fluorescent light tubes, a light timer and power strip. You may not have all that you need in your house. Go to the local hardware store or at a shop specialized in home improvement equipment and search for all the needed items. The power strip will help you plug all the lights, and make sure that you buy the same number of light tubes as the number of plastic shelves. Decide for a place in your house, where you will have your greenhouse installed, and if that place does not have an outlet, buy an extension cord. You can adjust so that all the lights reach the power strip, by placing it near the middle shelf. Put the light timer in connection with the outlet and decide for how much time you want the greenhouse to be illuminated. Now it is time to assemble the lights. You will not have a lot to do during this step, but to insert the fluorescent bulbs into them. Keep in mind that you do not have to spend a lot of cash on grow lights, to get good results. Just connect the shop lights with the hanging chains and hooks. It is important to position the shop light so they do not throw direct light on the shelves. You can adjust their position using the hanging chains and the hooks until you reach the desired distance between them and the shelves. When you get to the top shelf, you can hang the light from the ceiling. There will be a lot of cords involved, so you will need to keep them in order. One way to do that is to tape them to the shelves. Remember to set the power strip to off' when you connect all the cables. To see the result of your work, turn the lights on, but only after you have also connected the light timer. Some people prefer to place their indoor greenhouse in the basement or a garage. For such areas, cold winters can be a problem, but you can prevent that by covering the greenhouse with some plastic sheeting. This way, heat and moisture will be kept inside. While the plants grow, they usually need about ten to sixteen hours of light per day. For mature plants, the amount of time increases, especially if you grow flowering plants, like jasmine, rose or gardenia.
