Infant Yeast Infection: If Its Not Diaper Rash, Then What Is It?
|
Candidas albicans is the culprit in infant yeast infections, and it is a common cause for many other yeast infections. A sample from the area infected will be observed by the specialist, if you take the child to the doctor, and under the microscope, the sample can provide very useful information. What is the cause for yeast infection? Antibiotics have something to do with its appearance. When a toddler is on antibiotic medication or the mother that breastfeeds them takes such medicines, then a yeast infection may appear. Antibiotics kill bacteria in the body, including the good bacteria that helps the body fight yeast. You will do no serious good to your baby if you will just apply cream on his or her skin. Maybe the itching will stop momentarily, but the yeast infection wont stop, but get worse, instead. Yeast infections can only be treated with anti-fungal medicines. Among them, Nystatin is one that is usually prescribed by pediatricians; Lotrim AF can be bought at any pharmacy without any prescription needed. It is not difficult to get rid of a yeast infection. A few days, the child must be treated with antifungal cream and warm baths, twice a day, will help a lot. Do not forget to change the diapers frequently, and in a few days, the infection will be gone. Do not tie the diapers too much, as the skin will need air to heal. Always clean and dry carefully the skin on the buttocks and pubic area. There are natural remedies that can be used for yeast infections. Some diapers creams with tea tree oil may help, as well as those based on aloe or chamomile. The skin can be cleaned with tea made of this plant, as well. But, if you see that one week passes and your child still has the infection, accompanied by fever or chills, you need to take her or him to the doctor. There is no actual efficient way to avoid such infections altogether in your baby. Some precautions can be taken, however. You can always take care to change diapers frequently, as it may help. The infection is not contagious, so you can still put the child in daycare, without fear that it might expand to other kids. A sign that can announce you that your little baby will develop yeast infection is the appearance of thrush - which is yeast infection in the mouth. When the yeast is swallowed by the baby, it goes through the stomach, until it reaches the stool, and from there, on the skin.
