Innovative formats of Sony DDS DAT backup storage tape
|
Along the diameter of the tape, the torque increases when the tape is winded over the reel. The torque occurs when the tape rewinds or forwards during the search. Therefore, to lower the effect of torque, the Sony tape uses the lower sheet & shell along with the DDS-hubs. The lower shell strengthens the whole tape. So, the tape is protected from deformation if any stress is applied from the external of the tape cartridge. The tape reel of the Sony DDS-3 & DDS-4 tape is very thin and the tape reel has the new technology of “Dual layer coating". In high range of frequency the output is very high due to the thin “magnetic tape layer". This thin layer is necessary for recording high density. The Sony tape is very durable and stable because of the very smooth surface which is created by the non-magnetic layer. The magnetic particles of the Sony tape are very fine, but still the performance and output of the Sony DDS backup tape is very efficient. The magnetic particles in the Sony DDS-3 & DDS-4 backup tapes are very small and their size is about 100 nm. But, still the output of these tapes is very high. The Sony tape gives the best results even with small Magnetic particles. The Sony tape has the feature of “High Dispersion technology", that is why the performance is very high and efficient despite of the small magnetic particles. For the purpose of cleaning the tape cartridge, Sony has developed the Cleaning tape “DGD-15CL", this cleaning tape is efficient and reliable in all drives of DDS. The Sony cleaning tape gives up to fifty cleanings, but this mostly depends upon the drive. The cleaning tape also lower the wear & tear due to the tape head and reel contact. The other reliable tape format from the Sony Company is the DAT-72 backup data tape. The Sony has added the “Coating technology" in the DAT72 tape which is thin coating. Therefore, the Sony DAT-72 can hold large data volume of 72 Gigabytes (compressed data) & 36 Gigabytes (native data). The size of the Sony DAT 72 tape cartridges is small, but it can record huge volume of data. The high recording capacity in the DAT-72 tape is reached by the new innovative technologies of “Helical Scan" & “Dual layer coating". The Sony's DAT-72 tape has been tested by Hewlett- Packard HP in extreme conditions and has given the best results. The drives of the DAT tape cartridge have the technology of “Helical Scanning" that they use for the purpose of recording the data. This recording process by the method of “Helical Scanning" is very much same to the recording method used by the VCR's.
