Insects Repelling Solutions
|
There are a number of different products on the market which are purported to be able to repel insects; but how do you know which ones are effective and which ones really provide no protection at all? Given the fact that your very health could be on the line, the selection of the right insect repellant product is certainly an important decision. One type of product you might encounter is known as an electronic insect repeller. This type of device works by relaying high frequency sound waves that are meant to repel mosquitoes and other types of insects. While these devices are quite popular with consumers, there is no high degree of efficiency with them. Another product you might encounter is typically as a bug zapper. These products use ultraviolet light to actually draw insects into a grid, at which point they are 'zapped.' These devices do work, to some degree; however, most consumers usually purchase these products to rid their outdoor areas of mosquitoes and it's usually other types of insects that are attracted to this device; not mosquitoes. Beetles are the most common type of insect to be attracted to this device. Although the product may provide a continuous sound, keep in mind that doesn't mean that it's killing the insects you want to disappear. You might have also heard about a type of device known as a carbon dioxide lure trap. It is also sometimes manufactured as a mosquito magnet. This device works on the fact that mosquitoes and other types of insects are attracted to humans by the carbon dioxide we expel in our breath. The idea behind such a product is to lure mosquitoes and insects to the device with propane gas that has been converted into carbon dioxide. These products are available in a wide variety of sizes, each of which can cover a different approximate area. Some are even capable of covering areas as large as a half acre of land. Due to the nature of how this device works, it's best to keep it relatively far away from the main area where you will be congregating. The good news about this type of product is that it does appear to be effective at repelling mosquitoes and other types of insects. Beyond purchasing products to protect your home and outdoor area from insects such as mosquitoes, perhaps the best steps you can take is actually an ounce of prevention. This means getting rid of areas that might make it easier for insects to spawn around your home. Toward that end, always make sure that you empty any standing water in flower pots or anything else that might hold water, clean clogged gutters, change your birdbath water regularly, fill in any holes that might hold water and attract insects and place a screen over rain barrels, if you have them.
