Install a New Bedroom Phone Jack

Today's technology makes it fast and easy to install a phone jack in your bedroom. Whether it be for a phone, fax, or a computer to hookup to the internet. Most homes today use a 4-wire phone wire. The wire is divided onto four colors green, red, yellow, and black. The red and green wires are used for the main phone while the yellow and black are there for any additional phones you want to put in your house. You can see the green and red wires being fed through the back of the phone jack. The wires are then connected to the appropriate colors inside the jack. There are three primary ways to connect an phone to your new phone jack:
First you can go down the wall on the inside under the floor and to the basement, Second following the top portion of the baseboard. And thirdly up the wall on the inside and into the attic.

Putting the new wire in is made easiest by using the screws on the back of your current phone jack. The best location for the jack is on the edge of a stud so take a marker and find a stud and mark where the edge of it is. Next, where you made that mark next to the stud trace the outside of the box on the wall. Then use a drywall saw to cut an opening for the new box. Now using one of the previous methods listed above run the wire for the phone jack.

When installing this wire remember that if your going through the wall then your going to have to pull the wire form the new jack running it to the most convenient jack. Do all of this before installing the new box. Just to have some slack leave about 10 inches of wire hanging from one of the box knockouts. When going through the baseboard you can go through box form the front, bur make sure you leave enough wire to gain easy access to it. If it is too tight it will be hard to reach and move to use again or connect another.

Next screw the box on to the side of the stud. After you do that get a pair of wire strippers and cut strip about 3/8-inch of the rubber that covers the wire off. Next connect the sire to the screws found in the new jack plate. Make sure that you connect the right colors ( yellow to yellow, green to green, black to black, and red to red). Now secure the plate to the jack box with the screw that come with the plate.

Once again for the unattached end of each wire strip off about 3/8-inch of covering. This allows for adequate room to connect the wires properly so that they do not fall out of place or get loose. Next connect the wires of the new like from your exiting jack. Use the same color code. Lastly plug the new phone in and you are ready to begin making phone calls.
