Installing Vinyl Decking

If you are going to be installing vinyl decking this basic guide will keep you on the level.

First there are some tools you should gather up before you get started. They include your measuring tape, level, square, string line, and of course any permits or drawings you might have.

You are also going to need your circular saw with a fine tooth carbide blade, your jig saw, drill, screw gun,1/4 drill bits, Phillips head for the screw driver, spacers, utility knife, and last but not least your chalk line.

Now that youve got all your tools to gather you are ready to get to work. Oh yes one other thing it sure would be helpful if you had an extra body to give you a hand. Often a case of cold beer can convince a friend to give up his/her Saturday afternoon.

Lets get started:

1. Joist Spacing

Make sure that all of your substructures are sound and up to current building code for your area.

You should use 16 centers and a 24 center max on an unsupported span. You need 16 centers maximum if you are lying your decking diagonally.

2. Vinyl Deck Plank

The plank has to be screwed to your substructure using #8 deck screws with two per joist.

Align your first plank and make sure it is square.

Use 1/8 spacers to gap all the adjacent planks.

Do not use nails or glue on these planks! Use only the screws or it will result in damage.

You can have a maximum of a 4 overhang from the substructures edge. When you are butting two planks together you must make sure that the seam is on the joist.

3. Fillers Pieces

Press the fillers along the entire board length of the decks plank to conceal all the screws. Dont worry about it matching up you can just splice it.

4. End Plate

You need to attach the end plate to any open plank ends. Use your end cover fasteners to hold into place.

5. Drill holes on every 2nd plank then insert your fasteners

The plank has to overhang the substructure at least 1 so you can attach the end cover.

You will want to create an L channel for covering ends. You can do this by using your utility knife to cut the leg corners.

Thats it youre done your vinyl decking looks great now you can sit back and relax.
