Instructions For Miter Cuts

There are numerous web sites that will give you instructions for miter cuts. Many of them will tell you how to make a perfect miter. Here, we will discuss miter cuts and what ways there are to make one. I will try to give you ideas on how to make that elusive perfect miter, but actuality of it will come from your steadiness and hand-eye coordination. A miter is the means by which you join two pieces of material in a joint where both pieces are perpendicular to each other. This takes an exact 45 degree cut on each piece of material. While wood is the most common material used in miter cuts, various types of metal are used to make picture frames also and sometimes plastic as well.

The first of my instructions for miter cuts is to choose carefully the mechanism by which you will cut your miters. One of the simplest methods is to use a miter box with a miter saw made for it and a couple of clamps. It is possible to achieve a usable miter from this equipment with a protractor to aid in the measuring of the angle, but difficult to achieve with the forces exerted upon your stock by each stroke of the saw blade. My method of using a miter box is to use two clamps to hold the stock in place and when sawing the cut, let the weight of the blade be the only downward pressure on the stock. This will exert less pressure on the stock allowing it to remain in place more readily.

Other methods to use require more expense. You can buy a specialized saw called a miter saw that is a circular saw mounted on an arm that will allow you to bring the saw down upon your stock to make your miter cut. Some of these have premeasured angles that may be difficult to fine tune for your miter, so choose your miter saw carefully. Once again, using a two clamp method of securing your stock for your cuts will help you achieve your perfect miter. You can use a table saw for your miter cuts, but a specialized jig will be needed. There are free directions for creating good jigs available on the internet.

The two clamp method of holding stock in place for miter cuts is useful with whatever mechanism you decide to use for your miter cuts. It allows you to make the minor adjustments need to achieve a perfect 45 degree angle needed to make a perfect miter with no visible gaps. If your angle is less than 45 degrees, then move the stock under the clamp nearest the saw blade for your adjustments. If it's over 45 degrees, then move make you adjustment with the stock under the clamp farthest from the saw blade. This is a simple way to make the minor adjustments needed to cut a perfect miter. This concludes my instruction for miter cuts for you.
