Is Double Fertilization Beneficial?

As you look across at the neighbors beautiful velvet lawn in that lush green you wonder what the secret to such success is. You've heard double fertilization is the key but is it really beneficial?

If you read all the hype and advertisement supplied by the fertilizer companies you'll quickly come to believe that in order to have a lawn just like that you actually need to fertilize four times a year. In fact it is often referred to as the four step program.

Except for one thing - news flash - it's simply not true! And if you don't believe me the research done by the University of Minnesota should give you the proof you need.

Their studies showed that the best time to fertilize lawns in Zone 2 through 5 is actually in the fall around the Labor Day weekend. And then again at the end of October around Halloween. So double fertilization is certainly beneficial but more than that is simply a waste of your money.

Fertilizer companies would have you believe you need to also fertilize in the spring with an application high in nitrogen which is the first number on the bag to stimulate the growth of your lawn and turn it green and then again through the summer. In other words they would like you to believe you need to fertilize four times a year.

The problem is this application actually depletes the energy that has been stored in the grass roots which does your lawn a disservice. Fertilizing in the spring is not only unnecessary it actually damages your lawn more than it helps it.

Each year there is twice as much fertilizer being used than is needed. Great for the fertilizer manufacturers but not so good for your lawn or the environment for that matter because over use of nitrogen can contaminate ground water.

Studies in recent years have also indicated an overuse of phosphorus. In fact because the fertilizer companies have been so busy pushing their products there is a good chance that the phosphorus levels in your lawn are already too high. In fact your lawn probably has at least enough phosphorus for the next ten years.

The other thing the fertilizer companies tend to forget to tell you is that drought and nitrogen are an awful mix. Good for them but bad for you. It will promote blade growth but not root growth and it will compromise the health of your lawn.

Let's face it the fertilizer manufacturers and the companies that sell their product are in the game of selling fertilizer so if they can convince you more is good then it is good for their pocket book and their bottom line.

But more is not always better and so understanding that once a year isn't enough, double fertilization is an excellent choice, and four times a year has no benefit even though they would like you to think it does. It just goes to show don't believe everything you hear!
