I'm sure this isn't what your thinking when you're strolling the mall past all your favorite stores, standing in the check out line by boxes of candy, or shopping for the best car. It is very easy to spend money. It is even easier to spend money you don't have. When you spend money, you are making a choice. You've decided that whatever you're buying is more important to you than the money you are exchanging it for. If you hand over a 10 dollar bill for a new DVD, you've decided that the DVD is more important to you than the DVD. It has more value to you.

You might think it's wrong to cling on to money. It's wrong to place it above people and your own well-being. This is true, but it's just as wrong to put the stuff you buy above people and your well-being, which is essentially what you're doing even when you are greedy. When you decide to not give $100 to a charitable organization and then turn around and spend $100 on a new stereo, you are placing the value of the stereo above that charity.

This is not to say that you should never buy things for yourself but that you should always instead give it to charity. Not at all. It's this 'all or nothing' mentality that got you into an overspending habit. It's easy to save money when you have your priorities straight and when you have effective balance.

If you want to save money, you need to make conscious purchases. Think before you spend. This is often the problem with credit cards. It's easy to just hand over the plastic without thinking. Try to get in the habit of paying for things with cash, or at least get a debit card instead of a credit card so you are not increasing your debt.

Making a budget will also help you save money and it can do this while also letting you buy things you want. When you make a budget, you are telling yourself each month what you can spend your money on and how much. This makes it very easy and foolproof to save money. Plus, you can arrange it so that you can still buy some of the things you want. Instead of saving every penny at all cost, you can just plan how much you will spend and how much you will save.

Saving money is not hard when you know how to do it right and when you are in the right mindset. A shopaholic is not in the right mindset to spend and will therefore have a lot of trouble. If you are a shopaholic you need to get help and support.
