Italian Seafood Restaurants

If we study our world geography, we would know that the boot shaped country of Italy, which is located on the Apennine Peninsula of Southern Europe, has one of the longest coastlines in all of Europe. The peninsula is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. In history, the Mediterranean Sea played a huge role in conducting trade between the East and the West. Because it was in between the kingdoms of the old world and the growing Islamic states, a lot of city states of the Apennine Peninsula became flourishing ports and even "Maritime Republics" including that of Venice, Genoa and Pisa. It then became very natural that these Mediterranean cities' cultures be shaped by the sea that have yielded them with so much power, and it included not just their customs and way of life but as well as their cuisines as reflected in beach Italian restaurants.

Marche is one of central Italy's regions. It is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to its east making it extremely easy for the region to secure fresh seafood. Its famous local dish is the "brodetto" or the fish soup. The "brodetto di San Benedetto del Tronto" is one of the fish soup's variants named after the place where it originated, San Benedetto del Tronto. Another popular seafood dish, which is made of fish cooked in oil and seasoned with saffron, onion, and parsley, is called the "brodetto marchigiano." The mild, pungent flavor of the garlic and olive oil is paired with the distinctive fresh flavor of parsley, while saffron adds a slight bitter flavor and a mild yellow coloring to the dish.

Sardinia is another region that benefits from the sea. Sardinia is one of the Islands in the Mediterranean and is second only to Sicily in area. It is a definite tourist spot with its pure white beaches and turquoise waters but ironically, its cuisine does not rely too much on the bounty of the sea, preferring to cook with ingredients of the earth. Inspite of this, the island still has some notable seafood dishes. "Merca" is one of the local specialties, and is a small fish boiled in brine and wrapped in aromatic herbs tied with a string. The length of time that the fish is kept is according to the saltiness of the brine. This is how they preserved their food. Another one of their seafood dishes is lobster, which is boiled and then seasoned with salt and lemon, then topped with olive oil. This dish is just exquisite with the simple yet perfectly flavored lobster meat with a just little hint of citrus and fresh olive oil. Another famous seafood dish of this region is the "spaghetti alla bottarga" which is pasta served with dried lobster eggs. This exotic dish is a must-try when you visit a beach Italian restaurant.

Finally, we go to the city of Venice-the famed "City of Lights". It was once a rich port which meant that it was frequented by plenty of foreign merchants. The beauty of this once republic comes from the waters that fill it, and its power comes from the seas. One of the dishes that Venice is known for is a salty dish made with tuna, sardines, lots of beans, and onions - the rebechin. But the most famous of all the Venezian dishes is the risotto. The risotto is a rice dish that is made with high starch rice that absorbs much of the stew used to cook the rice. After peas and fish are added, the dish is complete. Risotto, in addition to being a local favorite, is known internationally and is a seafood dish that can be found at beach Italian restaurants around the world.
