Itchy Dog - What's Causing Your Dog to Itch?



Noticing your dog itching? If so, you may have an itchy dog. This is a very common problem that dogs end up dealing with, and it can include skin that is dry, itchy, and flaky. There are a variety of different things that can cause this problem, which is why it is often hard to figure out what exactly the problem is with your dog. While some of the causes of dog itching can be very minor, there are other problems that are a bit more serious. So, here are a few of the common causes of an itchy dog that you may want to consider.

Allergy Problems

One of the most common causes of an itchy dog is allergy problems. There are a variety of different forms of allergies, but in dogs it is usually food allergies or problems with contact dermatitis. This can end up showing up just overnight, even if your dog has not had a problem in the past. Some things that could be causing these allergies include cleaners, dog perfumes, shampoos, laundry detergent, and other normal chemicals that you have in your home. There are often food allergies that can cause problems with dog itching as well. These can be difficult to figure out. Make sure that you carefully watch what your dog is eating if you notice him itching to see if a change in diet will make a difference.

Fungal Infections

Fungal infectiosn are other problems that can cause dog itching as well. These infections, which can include yeast infections, can cause skin on dogs that is scaly, dry, and even itchy. Ringworm is another problem that your dog can get as well. This can be difficult to get rid of, since these fungal infections can spread and can even be spread to other animals or even humans. It's important that these problems are treated as soon as possible.

Problems with Parasites

When it comes to an itchy dog, there can be problems with parasites that are causing the itching. In fact, this is one of the most common causes for problems with dog itching. Fleas are very common, and there are other parasites that can cause the problem, such as ear mites, cheyletiella mites, and even scabies. You may need to get a prescription medication to get rid of this problem in your dog.

Other Possible Problems

Of course there are some other problems that could be plaguing your itchy dog as well. Sometimes itching can be a sign of a dietary deficiency, a problem with their thyroid, problems with the immune system, or even bathing your dog too often. If you are not quite sure what is causing your dog's itching, then make sure you take him to the vet as soon as possible.
