As temperatures begin to dip, it is once again time to bring winter clothing out of hiding and put summer wear away for a few months. If it's been awhile since you last purchased a jacket and you're thinking you may need to head to your favorite clothing store to pick up a new one this fall, you might want to take a few of the following tips into consideration first.
Jackets can, and should, serve multiple purposes. The right jacket will make the fashion statement you favor as well as keep you comfortably warm in frigid temperatures. In order to find a jacket that looks good and fits well; however, there are a few things you should take into consideration.
One of the first factors you'll want to think about is the style jacket you prefer. Numerous styles are making their way onto the market this winter and all the old rules are out. Some of the most popular styles for jackets and coats this winter include both short and three-quarter length wool coats for both genders, down filled parkas and hooded great coats.
Also, bomber style jackets are once again a favored choice.
In addition to style and length, you should also give some thought to the color jacket you prefer. Several exciting colors and hues are proving to be popular this year; taking their tones from the shades of the seasons such as red, rose, all shades of pastel blue and pink as well as pumpkin.
While it can be tempting for some people to reach for the cheapest jacket they can find on the rack, this is definitely a mistake. Unless you've found a really well made jacket that has been marked way down for some reason, you will only end up regretting such a cheap purchase. Chances are the jacket is as cheaply made as the price. Always remember that the purpose of a jacket is to protect you from the elements and keep you in good health throughout the cold months. Toward that end, it's worth the extra investment to pay for a jacket that will serve that purpose.
Whenever possible, look for a jacket with a lining. This is an important consideration because it will not only help the jacket to resist wear and tear, but it will also keep you warmer as well. Also, always be sure to double check the stitching on the jacket. The stitching should be strong and sturdy and reinforced in the shoulder area in order to prevent ripping or tearing.
Finally, while it's important to find a jacket you like in terms of style, design and color; you should also concentrate on finding a jacket that you feel comfortable wearing. Many people find that wearing a bulky sweater while shopping for a jacket helps to ensure that they find a jacket that is loose enough to accommodate any choice of clothing they choose to wear with their jacket.
To that end, take the time to try it on correctly. Make a point of wearing the type of clothing you intend to wear with the jacket when you're shopping. Move around to ensure that it fits well everywhere. Be especially sure to note the fit around the shoulders and back area as well as the armholes and hips. The sleeve length should also be long enough, but not so long that you feel as though your arms are being swallowed.
If you find a jacket that you like but just can't seem to find one that fits perfectly, go ahead and pay the few extra dollars to have it altered. The expense won't be that much and you'll make up for the coast with several years of enjoyment in a jacket that fits well.
