So be sensible, take time the week before to choose up to 5 of your favourite songs, just in case someone thieves your song, make them all songs you know the words to very well and practice makes perfect. Spend 3-4 hours on singing the songs the fortnight before, ask a friend to listen to stop from becoming nervous and get some positive feedback.
Some tracks will just stretch you too much, its recommended to get someone to choose a song that they think fits your vocal talents and if you avoid over stretching your voice above its natural range then you should do just fine.. By choosing songs that you like yourself and your enjoyment of the song itself will inspire you to make your performance really shine..
Make sure you drink plenty of water, a top quality singing performance needs your oesophagus to be hydrated and vocal chords relaxed and if you smoke try and steady the worry through deep breathing rather than ten cigarettes as that too can distort and alter your vocal talents. Have a little warm up by belting out a few tunes is also a good tip but obviously avoid notes out of your vocal range and no straining or it will wreck your performance.
The other tip to circumvent cracking up on the boards is not to shout. If you are in a loud place with your mates around and that guy from accounts you like, then ignore all discussion that will make you shout and just get into performance mode. If you spend the half an hour before you perform sipping a bottle of wine, smoking 20 cigarettes and yelling at your friend about how bad Vicky from accounts looks by the time you get on the mic your all ready pre disposed to give a poor act.
