Kate Winslet: Controversial Magazine Covers

Winslet was born in Reading, England to a theatrical family, which from an early age inspired Winslet to pursue acting.  As a teenager Winslet struggled with her weight.

In 1994 Winslet left school and appeared in various British stage productions and made her feature film debut in director Peter Jackson's acclaimed film Heavenly Creatures. "Her intensity," Jackson told Entertainment Weekly magazine, "made everybody else auditioning for the part pale in comparison."

The next year at age 20 Winslet co-starred with British actress Emma Thompson in Ang Lee's adaptation of the Jane Austen classic, Sense and Sensibility. Variety magazine called Winslet "outstanding as the high-flying romantic who gets her wings burned" and praised the film as "almost too much of a good thing." Winslet earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress and continued to appear in period pieces, like Hamlet and Jude in the coming years. The following year, People magazine named her one of the 50 Most Beautiful People.

In 1997 Winslet starred with Leonard DiCaprio in the blockbuster film Titanic, which earned more than $1.8 billion worldwide. The movie made both DiCaprio and Winslet bona fide movie stars. For her performance, Winslet earned her second Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress.

By 1998 Winslet married assistant film director Jim Threapleton in a pub in her hometown. In 2000 Winslet gave birth to the couple's daughter Mia but the following September, Winslet announced her separation from Threapleton. "There is no malice at all," she told People magazine. "Jim and I have great respect for each other."

A digitally-slimmed Winslet appeared on a UK edition of men's magazine GQ in 2003. The fake physique erupted a wave of controversy; Winslet criticized the mindset of equating sex appeal with thinness: "What is sexy? All I know from the men I've ever spoken to is that they like girls to have an arse on them, so why is it that women think in order to be adored they have to be thin?" In 2007, she sued and won libel damages from a British magazine that claimed she saw a diet specialist.

That same year Winslet secretly wed director Sam Mendes in a private ceremony while on vacation in the West Indies. In December, the newlyweds welcomed their son Joe.

Between 2004 -2006 Winslet continued her star-making and award-winning performances in movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and was again named by People magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in 2006.

Winslet appeared on the cover of fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar along with her The Holiday co-star Cameron Diaz in 2007. Later that year Winslet became the spokeswoman of Lancome's Trésor fragrance. "Trésor is a beautiful fragrance, it's subtle and romantic like a whisper," Winslet tells Women's Wear Daily magazine. "It's really a celebration of love."

Magazine cover controversy erupted again in 2008 for Winslet when she appeared in nothing but a long white coat and gold heels on Vanity Fair magazine's December issue. The actress talked about her weight issues in the magazine's accompanying article, and promoted her two highly-anticipated films of 2008, The Reader and Revolutionary Road-a collaboration with Mendes and DiCaprio.

In addition to her People magazine, Vanity Fair and GQ covers, Winslet has graced the cover of InStyle magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, Life, TV Guide, Glamour and Good Housekeeping.
