Keep Birds From Crashing into Windows

The obvious question is why would intelligent beings like birds go flying into a window at full speed? What is it they see that causes this odd behavior?

The first thing to know is that it's not what they see inside the window that they are trying to get to. The birds have no real interest in the interior of the house. In fact, it's likely they can't see it at all. What they do see is the reflection of the outside on the window, and they just see it as an extension of their world outside. While this will be especially true for windows that have some type of reflective characteristic or solar tinting, it can still happen with ordinary windows.

The solutions to birds crashing into your windows all involve destroying the illusion that the window is a part of the external environment of the birds. If the window is not highly reflective, simply drawing the shades, especially if they have a white backing, may cut down on the reflections enough to solve the problem.

Putting screens on the window has 2 positive aspects. One, the window is not as reflective and two, if a bird does still crash into the window, it cushions the blow somewhat.

Screens may not always be available or practical, so in those cases some other visual cues need to be put up. Some can be commercially purchased, for example there is the Droll Yankees Window Warning Web, which is just a large artificial web that can be placed over the window. It's not too obstructive to the view, but is a clear warning sign to the birds.

You can do the same thing with simple yarn or string, creating an artificial lattice or web, and this can be done unobtrusively. If the crashing problem is only occurring for a short period of time like the nesting season, you may simply want to soap the window or used shoe polish as a short term visual obstruction.

Often folks will attach decals to the window, but many people aren't fond of these from an esthetic standpoint. For the ultimate in easy solutions, you can simply leave the windows dirty enough that they are no longer reflective.

Finally, another thing to consider is reducing the bird traffic near the window. If you have a birdhouse or bird feeder near the window, it might be best to move it further from the window so the birds will not be so likely to be flying near the window to start with.
