Keeping Your Fastback 15xs Binding Machine Clean

Usually no maintenance is necessary foryour binder, but if a strip jams, or adhesive gets on the Fastback, youmight have to do a little cleaning. This article will discuss thecorrect procedures for cleaning both the inside and outside of yourFastback 15xs binding machine. You shouldn't need to clean your machinevery often but when you do it is important that you clean it properlyto prevent damage from occurring to your machine. One important note...You should NEVER use goof off, goo gone or other similar cleaningsolutions on your Fastback. These harsh cleaners can actually damagethe Teflon coating on your platen resulting in a very expensive servicecall.

Cleaning the Outside of Your Fastback 15xs Binding Machine

If the outside of your Fastback starts to get dusty, clean the coverwith a damp cloth and mild detergent. If there's adhesive on the innerbook clamps open the cover, then wipe off the glue with a cotton ragdampened with the Icky Sticky Stuff Remover cleaning solution. The glueshould come right off.

Cleaning the Inside of Your Fastback Binder

If a strip gets jammed or stuck to the platen, or if adhesive hasmelted onto the platen, you'll need to clean it. If you have time(about an hour), turn off the machine and let it cool completely. Whenthe platen is completely cool, the adhesive should peel off with notrouble. If you can't wait for the binder to cool, follow these steps:

1. First put on the heat-protective glove. Since the platen can be veryhot, always wear this glove when working with the platen.

2.Now open the cover to its full upright position. The platen is theteflon-coated plate that runs across the center of the unit.

3. To access the top of the platen, flip up the book rest. If theplaten is hot, make sure you're wearing the heat protective glove, thenwipe off any glue with a clean dry cotton cloth. Wipe the surfacelengthwise until it's clean. Do not use "Icky Stick Stuff Remover" or a"Citrus Solution" on the platen when the platen is hot. If the unit hascooled, wipe off any glue with a cotton cloth dampened in the IckySticky Stuff Remover cleaning solution. You can also peel the adhesiveoff the upper side of the platen with your fingers (or a woodeninstrument, like an ice cream stick).

4. Sometimes the bottomedge of the platen gets adhesive on it. To reach it, use the smallpulley next to the black gear. With your left hand, rotate the pulleytoward the back of the binder-in a counter-clockwise direction. As youturn the pulley, the platen rotates.

5. Stop turning when theplaten's edge has rotated 90 degrees. If the platen is hot, put on theheat protective glove and wipe the platen with a clean dry cottoncloth. Wipe the surface lengthwise until it's clean. Again, do not usethe Icky Sticky Stuff Remover if the platen is hot.

Cleaning the Back-Up Bars

The back-up bars are located inside the upper cover case. These barscan become gummed up from excess adhesive over time. Remember to usethe heat-protective glove when handling the bars if they are hot.

1. Open the Fastback Model 15xs cover.

2. Find the back-up bars.

3. Push one bar back up against the lid so you can access the inner faces of the bars.

4. Dampen a clean cloth with the Citrus cleaning solution. With the cloth, clean the edges of both bars.

5. When finished, push the top bar back down, and close the cover.
