Kitchen Devices: Cutting Utensils

Buying the right kitchen devices, tools, and utensils can be annoying, but it also can be a fun shopping spree. With technology growing rapidly, the simple hand can opener has gone electric, but do we really need all these gadgets? Some say, yes you do, it makes your cooking easier and more convenient, but are these gadgets worth your extra buck? There are many simple necessities you need in a kitchen; for example, pots, knives, scissors, and a cutting board.

The first and absolutely essential tool used in the kitchen is the knife. I highly recommend investing your money on a set of long lasting knives. If aren’t familiar with knives in general, start off with a chef’s knives that are about six to eight inches in length, a paring knife that is three inches and a serrated slicing knife. When you are buying knives, make sure the knives do not have a curved cutting edge. If you purchase a honing steel, it will help keep the blade of the knives straight and sharp.

Turners, also known as spatulas are a good idea when handing with pans. They are made with nylon, so when you are cooking with them, it won’t mix up the different flavors from dish to dish. Silicone spatulas are also another alternative, they will not scratch the surface of the non-stick pans or pots and are stain and heat resistant. When you are serving salads, plastic thongs are very useful. Steel thongs are very useful for cooking hot foods, such as flipping steaks. They are excellent when you are barbequing. You can find a pair of cheap tongs at the local grocery store of the dollar store, the quality doesn’t really matter, but it is just a terrific tool.

If you are really enjoy baking, a hand whisk is the inexpensive alternative to the stand mixers, but they still work just as well. Measuring spoons and cups are great for accurate measurements, I suggest you purchase the set of (1/2, 1/3, 1/4 cups/spoons), whether they are steel, wood or plastic, it doesn’t really matter. Peelers are great for peeling vegetables, like carrots and peeling potatoes. When you are at the store buying it, make sure you are comfortable holding it. From my experience, peeling twenty potatoes is not fun with an uncomfortable peeler. There are two types of blades available, steel and ceramic. To me, I prefer the steel because it is sturdier than the ceramic blade. Strainers are great for straining salads and holding meats and fish. If you use your dishwasher frequently, you may want to consider buying the metal strainers opposed to the plastic strainers, where there is a high chance of the plastic strainers melting.

You may want to consider buying a thermometer to use if you plan or often have big feasts. Not only that, you can use it everyday as well. The thermometers come in mechanical or digital. What is the difference between them? From my personal experience I find the digital thermometer to be more flexible; however, the mechanical is longer lasting. Can openers can be electric or hand held, many people are leaning towards electric can openers, but I find the hand held can openers are far better. They are far more inexpensive, and you don’t need to waste electricity. Not only that, when there are power outages, you can still use it.

I highly recommend not purchasing television promotional offers, they are far too expensive to begin with. Don’t be encouraged when television promotional offers advertise their knives don’t need sharpening because knives do need sharpening. Do not be fooled with the special features, the television can be deceiving sometimes. My advice to you in the end is: invest in quality kitchen tools, especially in knives, it will save you money in the future.
