Know What Hurricane Shutters You Need
|
These shutters are by far the most cost effective way to protect yourself from the wraths of Mother Nature. Research over the past decade have shown that protecting glass during a hurricane protects both the interior of your home and the residents. Thats one reason why hurricane shutters have grown in popularity. Most hurricanes come with some warning so it is possible to protect your windows by nailing plywood over your windows. The problem with that is it is both labor intensive and you are fighting hundreds of thousands of others for a limited resource [plywood] that is suddenly high in demand. If you install shutters they are there all year round during hurricane season and other seasonal storms. All you need to do is make sure they are closed and fastened down and your home will be protected. That said there are different types of hurricane shutters so you need to know the strengths and weaknesses of each. 1. Storm Panel ShuttersAre made of aluminum or steel and they are attached to the wall that surrounds the window with bolts. They are made of a corrugated material with each piece overlapping which provides the maximum strength value. There are many different styles of storm windows but they basically do the same job. The are inexpensive and they are extremely strong. You can easily remove them when not needed and theyll stack nicely together. The biggest problem is that they are heavy for one person to handle and they can be tricky to get lined up correctly.2. Accordion ShuttersThey can be made of one or two pieces and they are stored beside the windows when they arent being used. When storm protection is needed they simply unfold like an accordion. They are permanently fixed so once they are installed you dont have to struggle with them. One person can quickly and easily prepare for a storm. The biggest drawback is that they arent the most aesthetic shutters.3. Colonial ShuttersThese two piece shutters are louvered and attach to the wall beside the window. These protect while looking terrific. They fold together to protect the window and because they are permanently attached you dont have to worry about extra storage. There biggest draw back is they have a longer installation time because of the center rod used to lock the shutters.4. Bahama Hurricane ShuttersThese are one of the most popular choices because they look fantastic while providing excellent storm protection. They are one piece and louvered and they permanently attach just above the window so you never have to worry about storage and they provide excellent privacy and protection. There biggest drawback is that they tend to block a great deal of the sunlight.5. Roll Down ShuttersThese attach above the window and then rollup into a box when they arent being used. You can either lower manually with a crank or purchase the automatic push button system. One person can easily get things ready for the storm. The biggest drawback is the price which is higher than the other options. There are other options such as hurricane glass or basic plywood. But hurricane shutters are by far the most convenient and affordable option you have. About The Author: Alphonso has been working in the home remodeling industry for last 5 years.
