An important way of gauging what type of marketing is like for your industry is to sit back and really look at what everyone else are doing in your specific industry. Are they usually sending out postcards or are they more inclined in putting up posters? Do they always make it a point to have calendar printing done in December of every year? Moreover, do they make it a point to advertise their products and services for every other holiday?

Observing what marketing strategies goes on in your industry is definitely a good way of figuring out what you need to do in order to compete with them and come out to be in the top of the game. On the other hand, what would you do about the things that they are not doing? What if you notice that all of the other companies are doing other types of marketing tactics like sending out newsletters or handing out company and product brochures or catalogs?

You may want to guess at what the logical reasons are behind their disinclination to do other marketing strategies. First, it might just be because they have never thought of doing these other types of marketing practices. They are already effective and successful with the types of marketing they usually use, and so they do not bother to expand into other marketing strategies.

Nevertheless, what if the reason is because they did try to use these a few years before and they did not have any success with them? They tried their best and ended up losing money on the marketing push. This is why they no longer use them, and if you tried to use them, you would meet similar results.

Maybe instead they tried and failed with these marketing pushes, but that was because they did not do them right, or because at the time people were not interested but now they will be again.

So many questions to consider and all of them rest beneath the surface of what you can see with your own eyes.

Just knowing what a company is doing is not always going to tell you all of the facts behind why they are doing things. Perhaps they are not bothering with calendar printing, but if you invested in some you would have wonderful results with it.

Now, what is my point in all of this?

Any new business is going to need to research the market that they are entering before establishing their own marketing. A common trend is to look at your competition, and I agree with this as a step in your research, but too often, this becomes the only step in some people's research.

By only looking at the competition, you are not really getting the big picture. You are seeing what they are doing at this specific moment, but you do not know what led them to this point, or what they have done in the past. You need to not only research their current marketing but pay attention to previous marketing pushes as well, and also research who your customers are and what their interests might be.

This is the only way you can ensure that you will have a complete picture for when you start your own marketing.
