Kumon Learning Center: Why Is It So Popular?
|
It is easier for governments to think in numbers, but all these kids that are taught in schools are, certainly, more than that. Every human in the pursue of knowledge, may follow different threads, yet this desire and need is cancelled by the process of standardization on how this knowledge is acquired. Public schools cannot simply afford to pay attention to every pupil's needs, but learning centers can. This article is intended as a look at two popular learning centers that offer a different perspective to the learning process. These centers are Sylvan and Kumon and they will be compared in the following article. Both learning centers charge an initial assessment fee and others fees for sessions, work books and lessons. An initial assessment is a must, as this will allow tutors to identify the areas in which the student needs help. This way, no more time is wasted on teaching the lessons that the student is already proficient in. Plus, lessons will be designed to correspond to the needs of the student. Kumon learning center also organizes a basic skill deficit test, so the areas in which the students requires help are brought to light. These learning centers have methods of teaching people, that eliminate any emotional distress from the process of learning. One idea is that the lessons are customized, so everyone will have access to the knowledge they need. Sylvan learning center takes care of all the basic writing, reading and math lessons, while providing the students with a little something more, like teaching types of writing, such as expository and creative. They also offer the possibility to learn from home, through an online system. The lessons are not much different from those in public schools, but the approach is different. First, the student is assessed to evaluate their rank. After that, they are taught lessons that fit their skills. This way, everyone can progress from their real starting point. Kumon learning is only average tutoring that makes the learning process easier. Another thing that learning centers treat differently is the rhythm in which the student learn. Not all people are the same, and not their capacities, either. When a student is given an assessment, if they fail, they are just sent back to practice more, until they are able to pass the assessment and continue with the next level. Kumon also offers a timed curriculum. After instruction, the students are given a 20 minute period to show how well they learnt the concepts taught. Of course, the biggest downside of these learning centers is that they charge for their services, while public schools do not. Sylvan offers tutoring services that are very close to the student, but many may ask if the children, once left aside the tutoring process, will be able to learn on their own. On the other hand, Kumon leaves more liberty to the students to prove the abilities they learnt during the sessions. Now, thinking about the pace that these centers allow students to learn at, we cannot fail to consider the fact that, in the real world, you may not have all the time in the world to grasp certain concepts or methods of solving problems. Kumon helps students in that direction, too, but providing them with knowledge about the importance of time management, which can serve a lot in the future. For many, the way Kumon approaches the learning process may seem more restrictive, but it seems to be the one with greater results than the gentle approach of Sylvan. About The Author: |
