Land Pollution: What Is It?
|
There are many ways in which land can be polluted. When dumping waste produced by cities, or by factories, dump resulted from mines, or damaging the land through dangerous agricultural methods, the land has to suffer and it is polluted. Besides the litter that it can be seen with the naked eye, substances pass in the soil, polluting it. Chemicals are the biggest threat and they can be found in large quantities in pesticides and herbicides. Solid waste Human actions may produce a lot of solid or semisolid waste; paper, or plastic bottles, or cans, or electronic goods that are thrown as garbage - all these cannot be degraded by nature, which means that they remain on the ground for a large amount of time. During this time, they transform themselves into a serious threat for people's health. These fields of garbage become populated with pests, and the organisms that supposedly lived in that soil are killed or cast away from their natural environment. In time, that land becomes unusual, being no more than a huge trashcan. Solid waste can come from: Agriculture: Residues, or animal manure and crops may result in solid waste. Mining: Slag and non usable coal are solid waste. Industry: Paints, chemicals that are eliminated from factories reach the soil. Sewage: Sludge resulted from sewage treatments represent solid waste. Ashes: What remains after solid fuels are burnt is solid waste. Garbage: What we throw out as we do not need them, like pieces of glass, metal, cloth, plastic and other things remain as solid waste. The soil is polluted mainly by pesticides and agricultural poisons that exists in herbicides. We can point the accusing finger at the unorthodox methods that are applied as soil management, as well as at the damaging practices of irrigation. In farms, polluting the soil is something that happens frequently when manure gathers in large masses. They also use there a lot of chemicals, which makes for severe land pollution. Effects There are many effects caused by land pollution. Animals, birds and humans can be severely affected. Respiratory problems occur often enough, skin problems can be listed, as well, births with unwanted defects appear, and many cancers are caused by the pollution in the land. Here is how we can get affected by land pollution. When the polluted soil comes in contact with our skin, when the water from rivers and reservoirs is polluted and we bathe in it, eating fruits and vegetables that were produced using polluted soil, or by breathing dust that comes from polluted areas, all these are factors that contribute to our damaged health, for which land pollution is responsible.Prevention Land pollution can be prevented, but some measures must be taken. Education about not throwing garbage everywhere, recycling, rules about where personal garbage must be put, regulations and laws about disposing organic waste and inorganic waste, they can all contribute to a better environment.
