Lasik

Do you wake in the morning, fumbling for your glasses in order to see the world, and start your day? In today's technology age, more and more people are reducing their dependence on glasses and contacts with refractive eye surgery. Many are eliminating that dependence altogether.

Refractive surgery can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The most popular treatment option is LASIK or Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis.

LASIK Evolution

Traditional LASIK surgery has been around for about 30 years. It has become more and more precise, with advances in diagnosis and technology that come close to eliminating the possibility of surgical errors. The most sophisticated procedure is now Wavefront-guided LASIK, also called Custom LASIK. It is favored by many patients and eye doctors because of its extraordinary accuracy and its few complications. Most people who undergo LASIK enjoy major vision improvements just one or two days after surgery.

What LASIK Does

LASIK works by reshaping your cornea, the clear membrane curving over your iris and pupil. The cornea helps focus light, thereby creating an image on your retina. Refractive errors occur when the corneal curvature bends light too much or too little to give you clear images.

For example, if your cornea is too flat, then the light is focused behind the retina. The result is blurry near vision. If your cornea is too sharply curved, light is focused in front of the retina—making far vision appear blurry. Or if your cornea is uneven (astigmatism), light is focused in two places, giving blurry vision at all distances.

The procedure

Eye drops are administered to ensure that your eyes are relaxed and comfortable. Your surgeon will cut a round, thin flap from the cornea's surface, leaving part of it still connected. This flap is then folded back to expose the stroma (next layer of tissue). A cool-beam laser is targeted on the pre-determined treatment area to change the shape of the cornea. It vaporizes miniscule pieces of tissue according to your treatment plan.

The flap is replaced and your eye will begin to heal, with the flap protecting it. Because there are no stitches or shots, most patients can enjoy improved vision as soon as one day after the procedure. This flap technique enables:

- Less surface area to heal
- Reduced risk of scarring
- Less risk of corneal haze
- Decreased need for post-operative medications
- Rapid vision return

Good Candidates for LASIK

The best LASIK surgeons are very careful indeed about screening their potential patients, because not everybody is a good candidate by any means. You could be a viable candidate if you:
- Are over 18 years old
- Have stable vision
- Have been free of eye infections or injuries for a year or longer
- Do not have any autoimmune disorders
- Are not currently taking any medications
- Do not have scarred or abnormal corneas
- Have the right sized pupils (not too large)
- Are not pregnant or nursing
- Have sufficient corneal thickness
- Do not suffer from overly severe refractive errors
