Lawn Care Tips
|
Fertilizer always comes to mind when one talks about lawn care and although it is certainly an important factor there are many other things that play an important role in turning that brown boring grass into your very own golf course. Now is a good time for you to toss out the idea that grass is grass. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are many different types of grasses used for lawns and where you live plays an integral role in what grass you are likely to have in your yard. If you live in a cool season area you are likely to have Ryegrasses, Fescues, Bentgrasses, or Bluegrasses. If you live in a warm season area you are likely to have St. Augustinegrass, Bahiagrass, Centipedegrass, or Bermudagrass to name just a few. Shaded areas are serious obstacle when you are trying to grow a nice lawn. Planting shade grass can be helpful and if you have a high traffic area you'll want to choose one of the tougher grasses like a Kentucky mix. After choosing the right grass for your yard the next step to caring for your lawn is watering it regularly. If you live in the Pacific Northwest you may receive adequate rainfall so as not to have to worry but the rest of the country will have to water their lawns on a regular basis. Know your local watering restrictions and then water accordingly. One of the little secrets to growing grass well is lawn thatching. The lawn thatch layer prevents water from getting to the roots of your grass and it also houses those pesky insects you don't want. By making sure the build up isn't more than you contribute to the success of your new lawn. Any more than that and you'll need to get a vertical mower and take care of the problem. Next is determining a fertilizer ritual. Let's assume you are in the Northwest. Other parts of the country and the schedule will vary but this will give you a good idea about what you are looking to do.1. Start by applying a seed that has a crabgrass preventer in it. You'll want to do this somewhere between April and May.2. In June apply the fertilizer with the weed control. This will take care of two tasks with one application.3. In July or August apply the summer fertilizer. Scotts SummerGuard is a good choice. This helps strengthen up the grass against the heat and the threat that insects cause.4. As fall approaches you'll want to get your lawn ready for winter by applying a winter fertilizer that will give your grass a head start for the spring season. When you water and you fertilize your grass is going to grow which means you are going to have to cut it. You'll want to have two pieces of equipment - a lawn mower and a weedeater for the edges. Keep your lawn mower blade sharp. This will give you a nice clean cut rather than tearing and damaging the grass which makes it more susceptible to disease. Mow it in the evening when it has cooled and alternate the direction in which you mow. Use your weedeater to get those tighter spaces like up against the fence. We say our home is our castle. Well our yard which includes our lawn and our flower gardens is an extension of that castle. And you can truly look like you are of Royalty by simply following these lawn care tips. Suddenly you will have the greenest, lushest grass on the block. About The Author: Franklin Neave work in fertilizer producing industry for last 10 years.
