Replacing the existing floor tile in your home can give it a great facelift. There is a certain method for laying tile though that you do need to pay close attention to. Failure to do so can result in you not liking the outcome as much as you thought. While you may want to rush right in, there are plenty of things you need to do for the preparation of laying tile. Don't take shortcuts in those areas if you want to have tile you can be proud of each time you see it.

There may be a build up of debris in the area such as wax, grease, and oils. Even the residue from various cleaners you have used in the area need to be removed. This is necessary so that when you apply the adhesive while laying tile it will stick like it should. Pay close attention to the area underneath the tile you have taken up. If there are loose pieces nail boards in place. Make sure you check it to be sure all is level and that there aren't any rough spots. If you find that the area is in bad shape, consider laying a piece of plywood on top of it and then laying tile on that.

You will need to make sure all of your tiles are laid down straight. The easiest way to accomplish this is to start at the center of the room and work from there. In order to find the center of the room, you will need to mark the center of each wall in the room. Using a chalk line, you will be able to mark the center of the room. Make sure you double check that you are accurae before you start laying tile.

It may be tempting to start laying tile and then securing them in place but you want to do one more check first. After you have your center marked as the starting point, lay tiles out in a line in each of the directions from that center mark. Make sure they look straight before you proceed. The easiest way to tell if you are accurate or not is to measure how much space you have left between the last tile in a run and the wall.

If you are going to use an alternating pattern of tiles, you need to countinue to lay it out before you adhere the tiles to the floor. You will find it is much easier to make corrections at that point than after you have placed many of them in place while laying tile. Carefully choose a pattern that won't be too complex for you to complete throughout the entire project. Otherwise you will spend more time messing with that aspect of the project than anything else.

It is only now that you are ready for the part of laying tile where you secure them in place. Make sure you use a high quality adhesive so that your tiles will remain firmly in place. Depending on the type you are using, a roller or a trowel will be needed to spread it evenly. It only takes about 15 minutes for the adhesive to set up. You can also buy products that are already premixed so that it is ready to use immediately. Starting with the tile that is your center mark of the room, work in a pattern. Remember that your starting point must be perfect though or the entire project will be off.

Each of the tiles needs to be firmly against those next to it, with no gaps in between them. Place each one into the cement and hold it down to allow it to start the bonding process. Complete this process until you get to the edges of the room. Here is where you will have to cut when laying tile to get them to fit. Make sure you carefully measure the distance as these need to be firmly against the last tile in the line and the wall without any gaps on either side. Should you find you need to cut around pipes or other objects, use a piece of paper to trace the layout. Then you can transfer that layout to the tile you will cut.

After laying tile, you want to stay off it for a few days to give it time to properly bond. You don't want any of the tiles to be moving before they have set properly. You also don't want to wash the area for a week or so after you have laid it down. You can use a damp cloth if you have to remove excessive cement from some of the tiles.
