Leaking Amniotic Fluid: What Does It Mean?

What is amniotic fluid?

When the baby grows inside its mother's womb, it is surrounded by amniotic fluid. The fetus can move and breathe inside the amniotic fluid as needed, without the walls of the uterus keeping it too tight.

Amniotic fluid begins to accumulate inside the uterus two weeks after the fertilization takes place. The fluid is enriched with proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, urea, electrolytes, and phospholipids, and they will all contribute to the feeding of the baby. Recent studies show that amniotic fluid can contain non embryonic stem cells.

What is happening when leaking occurs?

What people usually say it is when water breaks' is, in fact, the natural process through which the membrane of the amniotic sac breaks, when the pregnancy reached its term and the baby needs to be born.

But leaking amniotic fluid can happen before the pregnancy is in its last day, and, if it happens 38 weeks before the term, it is called premature rupture of membrane.

The leakage occurs due to ruptures in the amniotic sac and it can continue like a discharge, or just happen as a sudden burst.

Usually, premature leaking can be considered the sign of a condition occurring in the mother's body. A bacterial infection or a defect of the amniotic sac, the uterus or the cervix may be the cause. During these episodes, the woman must not douche or have intercourse.

If the infection spreads from the vagina inside the amniotic sac, it can affect the fetus and its normal growth.

If a rupture of the amniotic sac is the reason for the leaking, this can heal in time, if it is small and leaking will stop, as a consequence.

If the rupture is large enough, the woman will enter labor in two days maximum. Immediate medical attention is required, as the fetus must be kept away from infections.

Many times, women mistakenly consider urine to be leaking amniotic fluid. The use of a sanitary napkin can establish the reality. If the liquid is colorless then it is amniotic fluid, but, if it is not, then, it is more likely urine. Women are advised to avoid wearing tampons during pregnancy.

Changes in the color of amniotic fluid are serious signs, so, if the woman sees that the fluid has become brown, or green or anything else than colorless, she must be taken to the hospital immediately. She will be asked to answer to questions about the color changes, so she must pay attention to the details.

Infection can be avoided from spreading to the baby, by early delivery under medical advisory.

You can test the liquid that you notice leaking through special products that are sold in drugstores. These will tell you whether you experience leaking amniotic fluid or not.
