To start with the basics, the skateboard is a wheel based board that you can ride, while making incredible stunts. The endless possibilities of creating an artistic number with that narrow board makes for many skateboard enthusiasts.
Before getting all too excited and worked up, there are some things you need to learn. As skateboarding is an extreme sport, safety cannot be taken lightly. You will need to buy all the right equipment for the job, like protection gears for elbows and knees, and a sturdy helmet. Also, the clothing that is best for performing this sport must have certain characteristics.
The deck must also be large enough so you can keep your feet on it, without struggling too much. You must also check the concave of the board, the size of the wheels, the hardness and the truck height. Remember that you will also need skate shoes, that will help you land on your feet and not on the concrete.
Skateboarding is gaining more and more popularity these days, which makes for more and more people getting interested in learning the tricks of the sport. Even if it takes a lot of time and dedication to master it, this is no impediment for those that want to get the feeling of flying through the air on a piece of wood.
So, check your gears, check your attitude, your determination and get ready to learn. These are just the basics but they represent the best way to start learning this sport.
The first steps
Your skateboard is very important, so you need to get familiarized with it, know its length, its width and how you can keep your balance on it, by trying to stand on it, or a few little jumps.
A few styles are available for skaters. Some prefer the skating technique with the left foot forward, others with the right foot forward, while some the mongo foot pusher is the thing. If you are right handed or left handed will have an impact on how you skate.
Pushing is one of the first things you need to learn how to do right. This seems to be difficult at first, as the skateboard will tend to get away when you do that for the first times. Here is a tip: try to do it, like you would walk, with a step forward and using the foot to push on the front of the skateboard. One push is enough, but it must be powerful.
Stopping is another thing that you need to learn. Here, there are a few different techniques. One is to use foot breaking and it is the easiest: the back foot drags slowly on the ground, stopping the skateboard. Another one is the heel drag, in which you step down on the heel, while ensuring that the front of the foot is still on the skateboard. Power slide is the third technique, and it is done only by professionals. Jumping off is the last method, but it should be used when no other method is available.
Now you know the basics. Just take your board and fly!
