Learn To Groom A German Shepherd
|
During the shedding season you may want to use a shedding blade since the German Shepherd sheds all year round, but during the shedding season it gets excessively worse. However, you need to be trained in the proper use of a shedding blade to use it. Another option is to use the metal rakes to help take out the matted undercoat that typically occurs around the neck, chest and thigh areas. Instead of hand fluff drying it is better to use a modern high velocity dryer to remove excess water after bathing. Always remember to brush in the direction of hair growth. When grooming your German Shepherd you may also want to consider a haircut. Using a quality pair of scissors you can remove the long hairs you find under the feet and any nearby stray hairs. If you want your dog to have a fluffier or fuller looking coat then you should brush in the opposite direction of growth and then do a light brushing in the direction of hair growth, but never clip for cosmetic reasons. Using thinning shears can provide your dog with an overall neat appearance. To achieve a heavy boned appearance you should use selective thinning for your German Shepherd. While grooming your German Shepherd it is also a good idea to focus on the toenails, ears and teeth as well. When you groom your dog you should check the nails and trim them as needed. Unattended nails that grow too long can split or become broken. Grooming your German Shepherd reduces the chance of matting and tangles since you are evenly distributing the oils in the fur. It will also help to keep a neat appearance since you are getting rid of dead skin cells and loose hair that can clog the coat. Just make sure you don't cut or scratch the dog's skin when grooming. So you don't miss any parts of your dog's coat it is best to use a combination of brushes and brush heads. It is important to carefully select the right dog shampoo since a German Shepherd can be easily affected by wheat or other allergies. Oatmeal shampoo can be one option to use but it does cause materials to buildup faster so you will have to bathe more frequently. If you don't have to worry about fleas then an excellent option is to use aloe shampoo. By using the proper grooming techniques you can ensure that your German Shepherd looks well-groomed all the time.
