Learn how to buy a sewing machine

It is hard to decide on a sewing machine manufacturer and say that their products are the best. Unlike many other industries, where such a statement could have precise elements, the sewing business is so diverse that choosing the perfect machine can be a matter of individual taste. However, even if you are a veteran as far as needlework is concerned, choosing your next sewing machine should take the following things into consideration.

Begin by asking yourself why you want to buy a new (or used) sewing machine. What will you mostly use it for and what are your most important individual requirements? Also consider any accessories that come with the sewing machine. Are they useful? Are they complete? If there is an accessory you need and it's not in the machine price, are you willing to spend more and purchase it? Such questions will help you narrow down the search a bit and they will also give you a clearer look on what you are going to buy. If you don't have a lot of stores where you live or if you don't have access to sewing publications, you should use the Internet as a very good source of sewing machine information.

If you are currently looking for a new sewing machine, I suggest looking at different department stores and retail stores to compare the pricing. If you are on a tight budget, you may find sales in stores and you will be able to save a few extra bucks. The internet is also an excellent option to search for sewing machines. With the internet, you may also find a few surprises, such as reduced prices that will fit your budget. Shopping and comparing pricing and branding are an excellent way of determining the right sewing machine for you.

Once you have decided on a particular model visit a nearby merchant and give the machine a test run. The test is very important, as it will confirm or deny all the information you gathered prior to going in the shop. In some cases, however, please note that your individual expectations of a certain machine might be 180 degrees different than what most buyers are looking for - this doesn't happen often though.

How do you test a sewing machine, well start off with asking yourself a few questions, such as how is the tension adjusted? Try it yourself to see if it works perfectly. Get some sample fabrics that you will be using most and test run the machine with them. One machine might work amazingly well on quilting and have poorer results on embroidery - make sure you get the sewing machine that is right for you. Never expect the dealer to give you testing material. Bring your own spools of special thread if you are going to use it. Ask the dealer to present all the accessories that come with the sewing machine. Try a few variations of your favorite model and see which accessory set is most appropriate for your needs.

If you're still not sure what machine to get, you might want to prepare a set of questions for the dealer. Ask him what happens in case of a break down. You should have precise information concerning warranty and service. In case you are informed that, for repairs, the sewing machine will be shipped out, ask where and for how long it will stay in repairs. Also, do they give you a replacement sewing machine until yours is fixed? Try to inquire a bit about the product's history with the merchant. Ask things like: “have there been any problems with other clients who purchased the same item?" All the answers you get, plus the data you gather from various sources, will help you make a good decision in regards to your next sewing machine.
