Learn sign language for children

Sign Language has been around since the 1800's for the deaf. When you consider sign language, it is usually the deaf that you consider. Sign language can also be beneficial to children that can hear. Babies can learn to use sign language as early as eight months and by 24 months they can sign whole sentences. Sign Language helps decrease frustrations when it comes to communication, increases the bond between parent and child, and also helps babies to communicate with their parents. There was an actual study done in the year 2000, where it proved that sign language for children can actually help them speak sooner.

There is a interpreter named Joseph Garcia who did a study in the mid-1980's. He found that children actually learn sign language quicker than they learn to speak. Speaking is a skill that requires about 200 muscles where sign language only requires manual dexterity. He also found that using sign language does not inhibit children from speaking, they actually transition easily from using sign language to speaking. Learning Sign Language can actually make children smarter.

It can be very difficult for children that have parents that are deaf or the other way around. Children who have deaf parents can become burdened unnecessarily with having to interpret conversations that they really should not be a part of. Also parents with deaf children struggle to help there children fit in. If most people knew some basic sign language this could decrease the burden on those who are deaf. Sign Language can also benefit children that have down syndrome or autism. Sign language can help them communicate, when the spoken word is too difficult. Kids that have problems with aggression, anxiety, depression, and self injury are usually frustrated with communicating and American Sign Language could really help them overcome those barriers.

Sign Language is not just for the hearing impaired but can help just about anyone. It is beneficial to children with disabilities or behavioral problems. ASL can also benefit children who are completely normal from the time they are babies. Being able to understand your baby creates a new bond between parents and children. ASL also can help your child speak sooner and communicate better with others. Learning sign language can be a benefit not only to your family but to everyone around you. Teaching sign language for children has so many benefits that helping others, that can't hear, is just an added plus.
