Learning the Terminology of Gun Scopes

If you are purchasing gun scopes for the very first time you may not be very familiar with the various terms that are used in regards to these scopes. It is important that before you go shopping for a scope for your gun that you familiarize yourself with terms that have to do with these scopes. You need to be knowledgeable so you can pick out a suitable scope for your gun. Following are several terms that are important and that will help you find the best scope for you and your gun.

Fixed power scopesThere are two types of power scopes, and fixed power scopes are one of the two. These scopes are gun scopes that come with a magnification that has been preset, and you will not be able to change it. If you know what magnification you will need these kinds of scopes can do very well for you and they may be cheaper than variable power scopes.

Variable power scopesThese types of gun scopes have adjustable magnification. You can turn the power ring to change the magnification of the scope to where you need it. This kind of scope can be great for people who need to have a variety of powers for shooting a different distances. If you are a hunter, then you may want to consider a variable power scope.

Objective lensThis lens is the lens that is in the very front of the scope. The larger around it is the more ability it has to bring light through, making it easier to see your target. You can also get an adjustable objective lens that you can manually change according to the yardage you are shooting at.

Exit pupil diameterThe exit pupil diameter is referring to the light that comes through the scope and goes into the eye of the user. The amount of this light is measured in millimeters. If gun scopes have a larger diameter, then they will be easier to use in low light, and target viewing will be much better than those of a smaller exit pupil diameter.

Field of viewField of view refers to how much you can see through your scope, and you will find that the higher power the scope is the less the field of view will be. If you only need to see your target, then you can perhaps go for higher powered scopes, but for those who need to see the surroundings as well they want the large field of view that gun scopes with lower power have to offer.
