Learning the lingo of SEO jobs
|
These are essentially labels for aspects of a website and it's pages, which a search engine reads to see what it's about. Each page should be labelled with a 'title' tag, a brief 'description' tag and a bundle of 'key words' which will let search engines know what that page is all about. Key word density This refers to the amount a key word appears on a web page and is normally shown as a percentage. 3-6% is thought to be a good number for SEO jobs, any more than this and it becomes key word stuffing which may attract penalties. Broken links This are simply internet links which don't work anymore. The significance to SEO jobs is that broken links may hurt your website ranking. If for example you many links into a given page on your site, and you then moved the page or removed it, any link to the old URL would appear as broken, and the links which where supporting your ranking would no longer count. As result it's important to preserve all pages on your site as it matures so as not to loose links. This is very important if you ever move to set up a newer version of your website. A doorway page Another dodgey technique in which the SEO uses a web page to attract traffic only to send visitors to another web page. Obviously it's not a genuine way of generating visitors and therefore is frowned upon by search engines. Site wide links This refers to placing links to your site across 'unnaturally' large number so pages on another site. It is generally frowned upon and thought that it may raise penalties or at least downgrade the value of links that are there. Inbound links In bound links are links to your website form another website. This is the basis of most SEO jobs, to build as many inbound links as possible. These do of course need to be high quality links although what constitutes a high quality link is not only a vast topic on it's own, but it is also evolving all the time. Hypertext link and anchor text This is a way of link from one location to another via a click on a word or phrase, which will usually appear as bold an underlined. On many web sites where content can be added this can usually be achieved by highlighting your 'anchor text', that's the word or phrase you want to link from, and then clicking on a link button which will allow you to enter the URL you want to link to. The second way of achieving this is to use HTML code as above. Optimised Many in SEO jobs will refer to whether or not they believe your website has been 'optimised'. It's a bizarre and sweeping statement, frequently used to baffle potential customers. In simple it will refer to whether or not your meta tags and site content have been set up properly to reflect the keywords your would like to be visible for. Link bating Everyone in SEO jobs is looking for a magic way of doing this. Link bating is a technique which involves putting something attractive on your website which results in people linking to it from their website, or perhaps their social networking page. It could be anything from a useful download or a free tool or a game. If you hit on the right idea, this can generate thousands of natural inbound links with little effort. In principle it's very powerful, in practice difficult to find that unique and magical idea. Sandbox A much debated topic in SEO jobs, and it refers to the phenomenon which is the delay which appears to hit new websites and prevent them appearing on google for a period which could be weeks or even months, no matter what you do. Many deny that it exists, but certainly in competitive sectors, those in SEO jobs do experience frustrating delays getting new sites listed, whatever you want to call this. If you're going to really get to grips with the lingo in SEO jobs your research won't end here. However, this will hopefully give you some insight and additional understanding in this minefield of terminology.
