Lessons To Prepare? How To Create A Lesson Plan
|
Whether you are a teacher in a classroom, a leader of a children’s group, or a parent that is home schooling you’ll have lessons you’ll need to prepare. Knowing how to create a quality lesson plan is an important step to quality learning. There are many different ways to present lessons but almost all lesson planning will work well using this “lesson planning template.” The first thing you need to decide is what it is you want to teach. What you are teaching will be dependant on what the program is – recreational or educational, what the school standards are, what your objectives are, and how old your students are. You also need to determine how long your lesson will take to present. This will depend a great deal on the age of your students and the subject matter. Then you need to decide how you want to teach the subject. Will you do a presentation? Use visual aids? Interactive tools? Determining these elements before you begin will ensure that your plan has cohesion. You want your lesson plan to teach what your subject is so you’ll want your topics to be clear and concise. They need to address the age of your audience so that they are able to easily comprehend the subject. For example if you are teaching grade one students to add 1+1 then you’re teaching tools must be age related. For example two sticks or two apples would make good visual aids. On the other hand if you are teaching university students how to do calculus your visual aids will be much more complex. Your lesson objectives need to be easy to measure. In other words you need to be able to easily determine if your objectives were successful. You may want to have several levels of objectives. So for example your overall objective is to teach the children to add. Your secondary objective is to teach them to add 1+1. Next you need to write out a step by step of the procedures you will use to reach your objectives. They don’t need to list every little thing but they should be an itemized list of all important steps that must occur for your teaching objective to be met. You will then need to decide how interaction with the students will occur. Will you deal with each student individually? Will you place students in groups? Are you going to partner children? You might also want to schedule some practice time for the students to practice the lesson. You will need to bring your lesson to a close. One way of doing this is to return to the beginning of the lesson and summarize what has been learned. You might also take this time to introduce to the students what the following lesson will be and how it will tie to the lesson of the day. You should then write down your assessment of how the lesson went. You’ll want to make notes for children that had difficulties so that you can return to work with them on a one to one or seek resource room help for them. You’ll want to grade yourself on how easily the kids were able to grasp your lesson. Be honest because this will allow you to improve future lesson plans. That’s it. If you follow these steps to create your lesson plans your students will enjoy their lessons and stay focused and on target.
