Level 2 Ultrasound
|
The Level II is a very sophisticated ultrasonic machine that is ran by technicians that have special training and are actually registered professionals in assessing abnormal fetal development. They work hand in hand with the perinatologists. Generally the Level II will be performed between 16 and 20 weeks however it can be done any time after the 2nd trimester begins right through to due date. As with a regular ultrasound there is no special preparation in fact you probably won't even need the full bladder. Yet the level 2 has so many medical benefits. Some of the markers that can be picked up with it include: 1. Trisomy 18 - Edwards Syndrome - signs include choroid plexus cysts, delayed growth, heart defects, kidney abnormalities, esophageal atresia, and polyhydramnios.2. Trisomy 13 - Patau's Syndrome - signs include small head, cleft palate, delayed growth, heart defects, omphalocele, and Dextrocardia.3. Trisomy 21 - Down Syndrome - signs include choroid plexus cysts, duodenal atresia, no nasal bone at 15 to 20 weeks, echogenic intracariac focus, and echogenic bowel. The level II ultrasound is a valuable tool for detecting chromosomal disorders and although this news can be devastating the earlier you find out the more options you have and the sooner you can begin to prepare for your very special baby. When you arrive for your appointment you will be asked to lie flat on the bed. The technician will then cover your bell with a warm gel. The transducer will then be run across your entire abdomen. There will usually be 2 or more technicians present during your scan and there may also be a physician present. Upon completion of the ultrasound your doctor will meet with you and discuss what was found. At this point you may be referred to a Genetic Counselor. Women over 35 years of age are at an increased risk of giving birth to a baby that has Down Syndrome or another chromosomal condition. Women who have had children with chromosomal defects previously or where there is a family history of a genetic disorder have are predisposed to such disorders. These are reasons why a Level II test may be requested. Although most babies are healthy when they are born occasionally a baby is born with defects. Sometimes the cause of these problems isn't known but Genetic counseling can sometimes determine the underlying cause. Sometimes it is a result of medications, exposure to alcohol or street drugs, or it may be inherited. Your doctor has found something that has raised their level of concern which is why they refer you to a Genetic Counselor. Now the first thing you need to realize is just because there is a concern it does not mean your baby will be born with something wrong. And just because you've been sent to a counselor does not mean there will be something wrong with your baby. A genetic counselor has special training and is able to better sort through the genetic picture. If the counselor determines your baby is at a higher risk more tests may be scheduled. Always bring any information that might be helpful with you. And don't be afraid to bring your partner or a family member with you. The level 2 ultrasound is an important tool in helping determine disabilities your baby may face at birth. It gives you extra time to prepare for that special baby.
