Little Jack Horner

We have all heard the nursery rhyme about Little Jack Horner who sat in the corner as he ate his Christmas pie. While we know it, are you familiar with how this particular nursery rhyme came to be? The story involves a steward for the Bishop of Glastonbury who was responsible for the financial aspects of the household. This included taxes and other forms of money that came in to make up the wealth of the Bishop as well as for the King.

The Bishop gave the steward 12 deeds to go to the King with as a way to bribe him. This way the Bishop would have to pay less to the King in the form of taxes as he enjoyed his wealth. The Bishop wasn't among the favorites of the King though due to the relationship he held with Rome.

The steward was well aware that the King would not accept such a bribe, and was embarrassed to take it to him. He also knew the wealth of the deeds that were involved so he kept one for himself. When he approached the King he only had 11 of them to offer. You may be wondering where the pie comes into this story of Little Jack Horner. It is believed that the deeds were hidden in a pie. That way it was less likely that thieves would find them if they should bother the steward.

The King was not impressed and it is said that he later had the Bishop executed due to him remaining loyal to Rome. The steward is believed to have moved to the Manor of Mells as that was the deed he had kept for himself. There are others that believe this story isn't accurate though. They follow the story of Little Jack Horner as above except for the part about him stealing the deed.

Instead, it is believed that the King had enough of the Bishop's bribes and wanted him out of the way. He offered the steward the deed of his choice for information that would help him to try and convict the Bishop of treason. To this day the Horner family legacy continues on as they still own the Manor of Mells.

Either way, it is quite interesting to learn this simple and fun nursery rhyme is actually about history and politics. Now that you know what the possible events were that unfolded for the creation of Little Jack Horner in 1725 you may never see that story in the same way again. In fact, it may encourage you to find out more about the history of this period of time. There are some fascinating events that unfolded and shaped the future.
