Living Air - Alpine Living Air Classic: What Does This Machine Do?

The air we are breathing has been decreasing in quality severely over the years, imposing the necessity to do something about this issue. Many Americans have noticed the problem and realized that the air in their homes is filled with annoying or even noxious smells. To avoid breathing compromised air, the best thing to do is to buy an air purifier. A few years ago, a popular product was Alpine Living Air Classic, which was thought to be the best on the market.

An air purifier like this is a pretty big investment, its prices beginning at $549. Also, it is a big piece of equipment, as it weighs no less than 19 pounds. The company selling the product - which is now EcoQuest International - claims that the machine can work for a 3,000 square feet house, but they recommend buying a second one if your house is bigger, the air pollution is high or you have a high level of humidity indoors.

The sellers say that their product works for your air, by producing ozone that is spread inside your house through an active fan. This way, the air becomes clean and fresh, advertisers claim. No, passing behind the advertisement and trying to see the real effects of the machine, we must talk about the controversy that ensued regarding air purifiers, controversy that was brought to the public attention by organizations like U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Consumer's Union and the American Lung Association.

First, let's listen to what EPA has to say about air purifiers. First, they show that ozone, being in its pure form or mixed with other chemicals, can harm your health, provoking chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation or it can even worsen some chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma. As regarding the air purifying machines, they say that even if you follow the manufacturer's instructions, the quantity of ozone freed in the air inside your house cannot be controlled, because it mixes with all kinds of other elements and it transforms.

As a conclusion, according to EPA, in small quantities, ozone cannot do much against air pollution. But if the amount of ozone is too big, then your health is in danger, while mixing with other air elements, it can even produce other harmful chemicals.

So, if you have an Alpine Living Air Classic, stop using it, at least as an air purifier. But we still want to breathe fresh air, so how do we do it? Here are some methods for reducing air pollution recommended by EPA.

Practically, in order to have fresh air, there are three important aspects: source control, ventilation and air cleaning. This means that you must avoid all sources of pollution, get rid on the inside pollutants by ventilation or remove the pollutants by using air cleaning methods.

Source control is the most reliable way to have cleaner air. It involves much housekeeping but it is working. Thos means that you must use with care any products or materials that can cause indoor pollution, control humidity and disinfect any wet or moisture surfaces.

Many people prefer outdoor air ventilation, which also works pretty well. You can do that just by opening windows, but you may also use some exhaust fans placed near the sources of pollution. The third method is mostly complementary, as by itself, it does not perform too well. You can use air filters, electronic particle air cleaners and ionizers, but only along with the other two methods.

If you still want to go for an air purifier, than you must pay extreme attention to the product you are buying and do not let advertisement fool you. But it is much safer and cheaper to follow EPA's recommendations for getting fairly clean air in your home.
