Living With An Alcoholic - How To Deal With The Situation In Order To Protect Yourself
|
This is not your problem The worst thing about living with an alcoholic is that you tend to make the problem your problem, which is not at all the way to deal with the situation. In a way, this tendency is explainable, because when you live with someone, almost everything you do has something to do with that person. Even so, let this attitude aside, as it will not do you any good, quite the contrary. You let your emotions cloud your judgment and you become ill as the person that lives with you. Stop encouraging them Another thing that you must never do is to play along with the disease. By no means, should you buy them alcohol or drink with them or provide them with excuses when they are too drunk to speak to members of their families or to go to work. Remember this advice: you are not a victim of alcoholism until you allow for this to happen. You are responsible for yourself so act accordingly. If you lie to everybody else about the drinking problems of the person living with you, you become an accomplice. Stop complaining You may have the tendency to pity yourself in an exaggerated manner. This attitude will not do you any good. If you spend all your time watching the alcoholic's movements, you will not get anywhere. Instead, try to think for yourself, about what you can do to help yourself. If you are not strong enough to care for you, you will not be able to be around for the loved ones as you should be. You may try different approaches to detach a little of the problem. Do not stick around them, try to change something by going out and ignoring their harsh words. Try detachment This sounds harsh, but it is the best solution. You must detach yourself of their problem. You are not the one having a problem drinking, they are. If you only do all the time the things they must do for themselves, they will end up drinking even more. Do not take any more responsibilities than possible for a human being. When you see the person drinking, avoid any contact because you will get hurt as the other does not have any sense of reason. Do not trust in their words, it is the alcohol talking, not them, so detach yourself from this. The power of faith Keep your faith in God and pray for the alcoholic. The daily prayer will help you and give you strength to fight against the alcoholism that has been affected your life and your family. You will pass more easily over the difficulties and you will have support, which is the most important thing. About The Author: Graham Lavery is the Editor and Publisher of Article Click.
