Loa Angeles: The City Of Angels

If you are considering moving to an area in California, a city worth your consideration is Los Angeles. Also known as the City of Angels as well as L.A., the city is one of the largest in California as well as the United States. Los Angeles serves as a major component of the entertainment system, home to many Hollywood epicons.

The population of the city of Los Angeles is rapidly growing, an indicator of the economic success of the city. In the last Census, the city had a population of well over 3.5 million people. In fact, it was estimated that the population may top 4 million soon. Taking the Los Angeles metropolitan area into consideration, more than 17 million people call the area home. The entirety of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area covers a sprawling 465 square mile area. Both the size and population of Los Angeles make it one of the largest cities in the United States. The residents of Los Angeles come from almost every country in the world, adding to the vital uniqueness of this city.

In addition to its close association with Hollywood entertainment industry, Los Angeles serves as a cultural center for many other reasons as well. Throughout the history of Los Angles, the city has served as a host for two Olympic Games; this occurring in 1932 and 1984.

In terms of employment, Los Angeles is an excellent city to consider for relocation. It is home to three major Fortune 500 companies, such as KB Home, Occidental Petroleum and Northrop Gunman. For the most part, most of the economy of Los Angeles is made up of international trade, entertainment and aerospace as well as tourism. Manufacturing also plays an important role in the economy. Other strongholds include telecommunications, health, transportation and finance.

If considering a move to L.A., you will most certainly enjoy the wide variety of native plant species that also call the area home. Coastal sage scrub, various poppy plants, live oak and many beautiful varieties of wildflowers brighten the landscape of Los Angles, not to mention the palm trees that are frequently associated with this beautiful city. The residents of Los Angeles enjoy not only a close proximity to the beach but many other beautiful natural areas as well, including lakes and rivers, hills, mountains and wetlands.

Of course, one of the disadvantages to living in Los Angeles that one simply cannot forget about is the fact that the city is prone to earthquakes, like much of California. This is because the city is located close to the San Andreas Fault as well as two other faults, the San Jacinto and Banning faults. When considering a move to the area it is important to take this into consideration and learn how to best prepare for earthquakes. This should not serve as a deterrent to making Los Angeles home; however. After all, millions of people call the area home, despite the earthquakes. While frequent minor earthquakes may be felt, the last major earthquake in Los Angles occurred back in 1994.

In addition to understanding the area's proclivity toward earthquakes, you should also understand the unique climate of Los Angeles when considering a possible move. The area around the city tends to experience a mild winter and hot dry summer. The breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean do tend to keep the temperatures in check somewhat; however, you can still expect typical temperatures to reach well into the 90's in the summer. Winter temperatures are usually far milder than other areas, with temperatures rarely dropping below 55 degrees.
