Locating an Inexpensive Lawyer with Experience

Trying to locate an inexpensive lawyer with experience when the need arises can be one of the most frustrating occasions in your life. It is far better to take the time find a lawyer before the need, or at the least know the resources to use to find a lawyer with adequate and applicable experience who won’t cost you a fortune.

The Internet is one of the wealthiest resources when it comes to content. Using the Internet to search for a lawyer puts every single lawyer who qualified for the search at your fingertips. This can be an extremely good thing or a painstakingly bad thing, depending on the search parameters you use. The key in using a search engine is to conduct your search with applicable keywords but not too specific so as to eliminate those sites that may not qualify on a technicality; i.e., “Find me a divorce attorney who practices in Boston and doesn’t charge more than $500”. Such a search may not return any sites because the search criterion is too specific.

Your local business council is an excellent resource for locating businesses that are within your community. This includes the lawyers who have experience that is specific to what you are looking for. You may be eligible for a discounted rate for being a resident in the area. The benefits of using a local lawyer are many including having access to them without having to travel a great distance or communicate primarily by telephone.

Make up a checklist of requirements for your legal needs. You can use this as a reference when you are reviewing the qualifications of lawyers. If you need a good divorce lawyer, one who is well qualified in handling criminal cases will not be the best choice, even if they are inexpensive. Once you have the needs of your checklist in order, having a consultation or interview to discuss your case is the next order. You need to know if the lawyer charges a flat rate or a per hour charge. The difference in cost can be significant.

Find out if you have to pay a retainer up front and if that deposit is non-refundable and applicable towards the total cost. An inexpensive lawyer can start your savings by providing you with a no-cost meeting to evaluate your case. Don’t be afraid to ask for a referral if the lawyer’s costs are more than you want to pay or can afford. Also ask if there are other lawyers within the firm who charge less. Some lawyers want to ensure that your business stays within their firm and are willing to provide a referral to a paralegal or other lawyer who is inexpensive.

Word of mouth can be a very powerful tool when trying to locate an inexpensive lawyer with experience. Ask friends and family about their knowledge of good lawyers who are not very costly and have a good level of experience for your particular needs. You may be able to find a great lawyer just on their recommendations.
