London Travel Tax On Gas-Guzzlers Triples

What is the price of emitting harmful emissions? Aside from dangerous repercussions, it could mean paying triple travel tax. In London, gas guzzlers such as 'Chelsea tractors' will be mandated to pay a daily charge of £25 to enter the territory's congestion charge zone starting October this year.

Owners of sports cars, luxury and 4x4 vehicles will see the charge escalate from the current £8 a day as part of the plan of Mayor Ken Livingstone to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the new congestion charging will also offer cars with the lowest carbon dioxide emissions a 100 percent discount from the daily charge. The scheme will start October 27.

"Nobody needs to damage the environment by driving a gas-guzzling Chelsea tractor in central London. The CO2 emissions from the most high-powered 4x4s and sports cars can be up to four times as great as the least polluting cars," Livingstone said. "The CO2 charge will encourage people to switch to cleaner vehicles or public transport and ensure that those who choose to carry on driving the most polluting vehicles help pay for the environmental damage they cause."

The congestion charging is an effort to slash London's CO2 emissions by 60 percent by 2025. To note, the territory produces about seven percent of Britain's climate-warming carbon emissions.

Actually, the said plan is far more ambitious than the present parliament legislation which intends to cut CO2 emissions by 60 percent by 2050. As such, owner of a gas-guzzler who opts to drive in the zone on a daily basis will end up paying 6,500 pounds annually, Reuters reported.

"I believe that this ground breaking initiative will have an impact throughout the world with other cities following suit as they step up their efforts to halt the slide towards catastrophic climate change," the mayor said in a news conference. He noted Transport for London would closely monitor the same, adding that the new scheme was flexible and that the charges and exemptions could be varied in the future.

According to the UK Press, the new charging regime will mean that the majority of cars will still pay the current charge of £8 a day. The £25 charge will apply to vehicles emitting more than 225 grams of CO2g/k as well as those registered prior to March 2001 which have engines bigger than 3,000cc.

Those vehicles getting a 100 percent discount from October will emit less than 120g/k. Of cars currently being driven in the congestion charging zone 17 percent would be liable for the £25 charge and just two percent for the total discount.

Based on the UK Department for Transport Web site, vehicles that will qualify for the 25-pound charge include Ford Mondeo cars with V6 gasoline engines; BMW 335i convertibles and 540i and 730i sedans; and Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover SUVs. The vehicles, which would not be affected by the charge, include Toyota Prius, Vauxhall Corsa and Peugeot 107 models.

In London, the concentration is aimed at engines not running boards or fenders. What is under the hood spells the difference - it dictates travel tax.
