Low Protein Diet - Five Things That You Need to Know

There has been a lot of press about low carbohydrate diets over the last several years and its advantages, however, few people know about low protein diets. This is partially do to the fact that low protein diets really should only be used by people who have health issues that require a restriction of protein. If you have recently been told by your doctor to go on a low protein diet you may be wondering what it is, and how you should adjust your diet.

The first thing that you should know about a low protein diet is that you will need to reduce the amount of protein in your diet, but you should not eliminate it from your diet. Protein is something that your body needs to function properly. Without enough protein in your diet your body would have a hard time healing wounds and fighting off infections. This is why it is critically important to know how to reduce the amount of protein that is in your diet you that you stay healthy, without reducing it so much that your body is unable to protect your health from damage cause by infections and wounds.

There are only a few reasons why a doctor would prescribe a diet low in protein, and one of those reasons is that you have a disease or condition that inhibits your body's ability to process protein. If your body is unable to process protein properly then a toxic level of protein can build up in your blood and cause organ damage. Some of the medical conditions that inhibit your body's ability to process protein include: cirrhosis, primary bilary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

The third thing that you should know about this type of diet is what types of food contains high concentrations of protein. As you probably already know protein is the primarily component of muscles, so meat is a major source of protein. Other foods that have high concentrations of protein include: eggs, fish, poultry, peanut butter, and dairy products. If you are put on a diet low in protein you will want to avoid these foods.

Now that you know what foods contain a high concentration of protein, you next will need to learn what foods contain only trace amounts of protein. Some of these foods include sugars and fats. If you are trying to limit the amount of protein that is in your diet you will want to make sure that you monitor all sources of protein intake, including sources with trace amounts of protein.

After learning about the basics of low protein diets you next need to know how to grocery shop for this diet. First you will want to create a shopping list and an off limits list. On your off limit list will be the foods that have high concentrations of protein like meats and dairy. On your shopping list you will want to list foods that either don't contain protein or that contain only trace amounts of protein. Luckily foods are labeled with their nutritional information so you will easily be able to determine how much protein a food product contains.
