Low Protein Foods - Six Options for Your Shopping List

Protein is an essential part of a healthy diet. It is needed to supply the body with the essential amino acids that it needs to function. The nutrients contained in protein are also used by the body to balance hormone levels, support your immune system, repair muscles, build muscle, grow hair, replace skin cells, grow nails, and produce organ and blood cells. Because of the importance of protein it is not a good idea to eliminate it from your diet. However, there are a few circumstances when a low protein diet may be required. All of these circumstances are caused by medical conditions that inhibit your body's ability to digest protein, and as a result a build up of protein in your blood can reach toxic levels. If you are plagued with one of these medical conditions then you will need to consume foods that are naturally low in protein.

A good choice for low protein foods are green, leafy vegetables. These vegetables are good to eat if you are on a low protein diet because they generally don't contain enough protein to impact your health. They are also a good food choice because they contain a lot of beneficial nutrients, and they are very filling.

Another good choice for low protein foods are hearty breads. These foods will contain trace amounts of protein, but they will generally fall within your protein limitations set by your doctor. To fill yourself up, and to compensate for missing protein on your sandwich, you can slice the bread thicker or you can use a hearty bread like rye or pumpernickel. Whole grain breads are another good food option, however, these types of breads will have more protein in them then white bread or sourdough bread.

The third option for low protein foods are pastas. Pastas are a great option for thickening soups, and filling up your stomach without having to eat large amounts of protein. You can eat whole wheat or regular pastas. However, if you are on a low protein diet you will want to avoid eating high protein pastas.

The fourth option that you have to reduce the amount of protein that you are eating is to simply use a couple of slices of thinly cut deli meat and then thicken up your sandwich with vegetables, pickles, and condiments. If you decide to use this method for reducing your protein intake you will need to read the nutritional information printed on the packaging to determine how many grams of protein each slice of meat has.

The fifth option that you have to reduce the amount of protein that you are eating is to eat rice. Rice can be used to thicken soups or it can be used to create vegetarian dishes and stir fries. Rice does contain protein so you will want to read the nutritional information on the package of rice to determine how much protein is contained within each serving of rice. The amount of protein will vary by rice variation so make sure that if you change rice types you don't assume that offers the same amount of protein as the last type of rice.

The final option that you can use to reduce the amount of protein that you eat is to buy products that have been manufactured for low protein diets. There are a few companies that produce low protein foods. These products can usually be found in the health food aisle or in the cereal aisle of your local grocery store. If you can't find these products at the grocery store you may need to go to a health food store or to a sports nutrition store like GNC.
