Luck and how different people perceive it
|
Luck is one of the things each one of us wants to have on his or her side. There are many different contexts in that some person can talk about luck. Whether luck is talked about in psychological context or is referred to as a pure chance, you will be better of if you know some of these contexts. This article will talk about luck, different contexts for luck and different examples to clarify the idea. Based on this information you will be able to find more examples and more clarification. Let’s take the psychological concept of luck. In this case people perceive luck as something spiritual, something that they may or may not have. These people may believe that whether they can or don’t have luck is determined not by them but by some other force. These people also may think that they can influence their luck through different rituals, activities or talismans. Trying to avoid some activities or situations also applies to this category. It is important not to confuse the above things with some person’s true religious beliefs. There are several examples of different rituals, activities, talismans and situations that some people believe may influence their luck. For example, many people will consider the black cat that crossed their route the sign of bad luck. Also the number 13 is considered unlucky. Many people perceive the day that fells on Friday the 13th as an unlucky day. Another bad luck sign is breaking the mirror. Many people try to avoid the situations described above. On the other hand there are many good luck signs. For example, horseshoes and rabbit’s feet are considered lucky. Many people use them as talismans to bring good luck. The number seven is also considered lucky. Many people would consider knocking on the wood as a possible way to increase their luck. Ladybugs are a very well known example of the lucky sign. There are many other lucky signs that differ from one culture to another and from one country to another. There are people who don’t really take the above signs very seriously and who think that they don’t believe in the above signs. An interesting fact is that some of these people would still try to avoid unlucky situations and encourage lucky ones even if they don’t believe in them. This is more of a psychological factor that deals with something unknown that wasn’t proven to be either true or false. Another way to look at luck is as a pure chance. In other words many people perceive luck as a mathematical probability that something ill or will not happen. Many scientists call this a rational personal viewpoint of luck. Some event may or may not happen with some person based on statistical probability. It’s like flipping a coin. There is a 50% chance in this case that the side you guessed will win. If it does, you consider this event as lucky. If it doesn’t, you consider it unlucky. There are many different examples where luck is considered in the statistical probability context. One example would be the lottery. There is a certain small probability (percentage) that you may win the lottery. Also many card games have similar probabilities of landing a certain card combination, like getting a flush or straight combination in poker game or getting 21 points in a blackjack game.
