Lug that Portable Computer!

I was bringing home my "luggable" (what passed then as a portable computer). That's correct, long before the debut of wholesale computers as little as a palm print, the luggable computer was an innovative advance - weighing in at about 30-40 pounds, it was the size of a small suitcase. It had a barely usable screen that was about the size of a notecard attached to the memory unit which in turn occupied the bulk the contraption. The keyboard formed the lid of the 'suitcase". It was full size which meant just about the same thing it still means and it snapped onto the front, creating a carrying strap to tote the whole thing around. When you turned it on, after several minutes, the tiny black screen would glow with dull green lettering and you could word process to your heart's content. You had to be a little familiar with MS-Dos because that is how you gave certain commands.

But where could you take it? Well, unlike your wholesale computer laptops that accompany you on airplanes, bicycles and to coffee shops, as a practical matter, you could only take your nearly portable computer to your apartment. Then you would type up some documents, then haul it to the office again to plug into a mammoth parent computer and continue your work that way.

Doesn't sound like an advance, right? But consider, the luggable was a huge innovation from the back room full of punch cards that had signaled the beginning of the computer era only a few years before. Take home a computer? That was just unbelievable!

And that was the start of the "work 24/7" mentality that has now descended upon us all. Long ago, before the wholesale computer technological revolution and the other inventions in things like cell phone technology and email, netbooks and notebooks, and MACS, you could control to a CEO, a client, anybody. In those days you were able to put things off: "I won't be able to work on that until I can get to a computer." "The check in in the mail." "I won't be near a phone." "Can you put it on the teletype?"

In short, then, you were not expected to work day and night. You could not get things done overnight because the tools simply did not allow it. Now that it does, folks are so smugly happy with their wholesale computers and other fancy electronic gadgets, do they realize it means they have to keep incredibly busy each second of every day? Geez, never did I guess my luggable was the start of no pauses, no vacations, no intervals.

Good or bad developments?!
