Maid of Honour Speeches for a Modern Marriage

Time was when women like children were seen and not heard. Today, though, they have no problem speaking out and being heard. Maid of honor speeches given at weddings are one example of this trend. They will usually be given by either the sister of the bride or by a close friend. What she will say will depend on her relationship.

Sisters who give these speeches will probably talk about their shared childhood. She will be the one who can remember the bride as the sibling that followed her around saying "Can I play with you?" She will remember incidents at school or in the home that maybe the bride and her parents have long forgotten. Such speeches will be very personal indeed. Added to that she will be the one who knows a lot about the courtship of the couple and will probably have something to say about that in her speech.

Other maid of honour speeches will be given by a close friend of the bride and will take a different slant. It could be that the bride met her husband when the friends were out on the town together. It might be that they dated in a foursome. Certainly such speeches will usually speak more about recent events than one given by a sister.

One thing such speeches will have in common is their best wishes for the happy couple. They will undoubtedly have helped prepare the wedding. They will have experienced the highs and lows of the months preceding the wedding. They may have had to calm the bride on occasions and they were probably the ones who helped her choose her dress. These speeches will usually reflect all the excitement of these preparations.

Maid of honour speeches are not given at every wedding. It could be that the bride doesn't want them or it may be that her sister or friend is too shy to give such a speech. When they are given, however, they are usually humorous as well as being slightly sentimental. That is not to say that some bridal attendants don't say it like it really is and THEN there may certainly be a blushing bride!
